Marcelo's omo plata

Marcelo Garcia seems to put a lot of emphasis on his omo plata and mono plata. His DVDs and books talk about them extensively, but I don't recall him using them much in competition? When I think of his comp wins they're almost all RNC, Guillotine, N/S choke...anyone know which matches he's taken with omo/mono platas?

He submitted Rolles Gracie in ADCC 2007 with his platform armbar, which some may consider a variation of the omoplata.

He also omoplataed Pablo Popovitch in ADCC 2009, wrist locked the shit out his wrist form there and then ended up with the sweep.

damn the armlock on Rolles came fast as hell too. Ive seen him trick people with that armlock in practice, but in comp he slappes it on hard and super fast!

Batista Peinado from Marcelo's academy caught someone in it at ADCC this year. There aren't any free vids of it out there, and I've never been able to catch it but maybe once in practice. Marcelo says it's a timing thing, and to make sure that you capture their hand in your armpit, not the wrist, because if you just get the wrist they can rotate their hand. If you catch their hand in your armpit they can't wriggle it and you can pop the elbow real fast. It's all timing and has to be quick. You can't set it up slow.

He doesn't use it much to finish. He uses the Omoplata more as a position to sweep and sometimes end up in his spiral armlock, which is very similar to the monoplata which Marcelo doesn't really use anymore. The spiral is better for attacking the arm, and if you can't attack the elbow squeezing the legs together or hipping up, then you can throw the leg over the face for the monoplata. This Marcelo HL came out yesterday. You can see some omoplatas and spiral armbars

Drew, ever since me and my teammate got on MG inaction, we have been hitting those spiral armbars like crazy, especially from side control when someone turns into you. Its a great move.

Actually he's right. He got a nice Omoplata and then went for the wristlock on Pablo in 09. He didn't get the tap and got the sweep.

BUT, in 05 Marcelo did finish Pablo with a wristlock. The 07 Marcelo win ove Pablo was with a North/South choke.
