I think we'll only see him competing in superfights or such.. maybe.

It's sad to see him retired but he got nothing else to prove.

It's nice to see such a elite athlete have so much love for his sport, in other sports by the time the athlete retires they border line hate the sport but you can tell BJJ will always be a big part of Marcelo's life

Shame to see him go. You always knew when you watched one of Marcelo's matches that it would be exciting. Wish more of the "stall and win by an advantage" guys had his "go for the kill" spirit.

Marcelo's awesome. Great competitor and an even better person. Met him once at the world's and he was one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

for you guys on the northeast, does Marcelo regularly show up to smaller tournaments to coach his guys? or does he only do big stuff like pans?

I don't see anything sad about a guy at his level focusing on teaching instead of competing himself.

Agreed. I'd save the heartbreaking sentiment for a situation where it wasn't his choice to pursue an option (i.e. an illness that prevented him from doing BJJ at all).

My brain is bigger than my heart. MG focusing on coaching instead of competing is a massive net gain for the grappling community as a whole. It isn't something to mourn.

i don't want to watch it now.

and seriously, there is nothing left to prove in the world of grappling for this man.

4 time ADCC division winner, with i don't even know how many IBJJF world championships at blackbelt. we will probably have to wait for decades to get to see someone so far ahead of the game again.

and i'm pretty sure some monstrous competitors from his academy will be kicking ass in future ADCC events.

He had quite a few guys compete over the summer at a Grappler's Quest in North Jersey and he wasn't there. He seems to do mostly the big stuff. It would have been cool to see him coach Mathias Diniz against Keenan.

He has not had anything to prove for years. I do not think he is completely done competing, he is young and I think he may pop up in a competition here and there

Looks to me like the idea of retiring has been upsetting him for a while. I hope to see him compete again.
