In the thirties, Nazi-ism was popular in America with many powerful proponents, like Henry Ford. It didn't have the stigma yet.
 
Lots of people wear Che Guevara shirts with no idea who he is.

I also think a lot of people who say "People who wear Che shirts don't even know who he is or what he stood for" also don't know who he is and what he stood for. It's kinda become a talking point where people regurgitate a line or two that they've heard, but don't actually know anything.
