Man drowned while playing a game of “Who can stay underwater the longest,”

It's still a pretty bad idea, because the second you go out your lungs fill with water. People have been immediately removed from the water and given CPR and still died. High risk, zero reward.

Nothing to disagree with there. This just seems to be getting the same reaction as people driving with eclipse glasses on and looking at the sun, then predictably veering off a mountain road.

Played stupid game. Won stupid prize.

Dude fucking won though. What a beast. Set a record none of his friends could beat.

I think it comes down to whether you've heard of people dying this way before or not. There are plenty of people that grew up playing games like this where nobody ever got hurt, that think it's just a freak accident. But it actually has the potential to be extremely dangerous. Before hearing the story about the sherdogger who's brother died, like many people I assumed it wasn't possible to hold your breath long enough to die.

Knowing it's possible to circumvent that warning system and drown immediately changed my opinion pretty quickly.

Probably not as hard as you would think. It's not necessarily blacking out from lack of oxygen, but according to this article, "the drop in partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood gas". I used to swim laps underwater but I'm too freaked out to do it now. There's a Sherdogger who lost his brother like this actually.

That sounds like shallow water blackout which usually happens when you are returning from depth and come back to the last 0-5 m of depth but they were just in a shallow lake

I know a few people that have died from it including a good mate but without freediving training or experience it is damn hard to get past the CO2 driven need to breathe and then diaphragm spasms and stuff.

Lol. I don't understand how someone could allow themselves to drown like that. Oh well goodbye dumbass.

I live at the lake that connects to Sinclair. We looked at some houses there before buying this one a few months back. There are some real retards around here.

"He gave 110%."
First time this has ever been accurate.

Also, the guy who claimed victory deserves an asterisk at the least, and should publicly apologize for stolen breath-holding valor.

When you hear the words “Bachelor Party “ you can bet 100 he had been drinking . I’d bet my left nut that he was wasted which most likely contributed to his death .

Drunk people in the water. Stupidest thing you can do is drink and swim.

Every day, millions of people around the world do it w/out dying. The booze is a moot factor. It's the water; don't be a dipshit and you're good, fuck around and learn what cruel mistress means.

I had contests like this as a kid. Doing it when there are a group of people that should be concerned for your safety or at least aware of whether or not you have surfaced isn't as dumb as people are making it sound.

We did it in highschool for the swim component of gym class. Everybody did it, spurred on by the teacher.

What happens is you take a voluntary breath because you go unconscious so it basically fills up your whole lungs and you instantly drown. It’s a lot different than being conscious and not being able to hold your breath any longer and then taking a small voluntary breaths

What weird crowd.

So they have a contest and while one is trying to hold his breath the rest of the party just went about their business?

Sounds more like a prank gone bad looks like they were just joking about the contest until this gullible man really went for it.

Back in the day a fell for a "run up the hill" game at a party they started talking about this game of who can run fastest up hill and one of my buddies had his stop watch ready and just like that I told him time me I will go first so I started running and they just went on drinking and eating while I run up the muddy hill like a fool.

When I got back they were just chilling and I asked so who should go next? They just said nah we would rather eat and get wasted.

Yeah, I thought this was pretty weird
The group of 15 men didn’t realize Bunsa hadn’t gotten out of the water at first. Thinking he was already back at the house, they went up to find him, authorities said.
You don't see him, so your first idea is to go somewhere else to look for him, instead of, you know, looking right in front of you, where you know he was a few minutes ago?

Hehe yep thats what I am thinking 7 minutes .

Yeh he won. If he had no training than he had some damn good willpower too, it is damn hard to hold your breath until you black out, esp if you aren't diving to depth or anything.

I bet he hyperventilated first.

A little life lesson for everyone here....
The need to breathe is NOT triggered by lack of oxygen in the blood, but by the build-up of CO2.

When you hyperventilate, you remove all CO2. Then when you hold your breath, it now means you can run out of O2 before the Co2 builds up to the point where you feel the need to breathe.

You pass out underwater suddenly and drown.

Don't hyperventilate before holding your breath underwater. You will drown.

what a drowner I mean downer

There has to be more to the story. If he just in a regular pool, and can swim, his body not allow him to just stay under like that. If you dont believe me, you dont even need a pool. Just sit there hold your breath and see if you can kill yourself like that.

How he force himself to allow all that CO2 to build up?

Fkn lol - they killed this dude.

No one holds their breath until they're dead unless they pop some shit coming up from a dive or waves keep them under - but this is in a lake.
