There's much more obvious and logical reasons why Colby is getting a titleshot than this particular theory, but some people can't/won't accept it.

I look at Colby’s resume and I’m blown away by all his amazing wins and activity, tbh.

LOL, that's definitely not what I'm talking about.

You might have to accept that he is (relatively) a needle mover. A bigger draw compared to a Belal Muhammad. Someone more bankable than most. He's co-headlined 3 PPVs already, one of them wasn't even for a belt which puts him in a select class. He's a known commodity as a headliner, a proven asset and the UFC obviously thinks he's reliable enough in this regard. It's just $$$.

But why is he a draw?

A huge reason is his relationship with the man in the OP, he essentially built an entire character and gimmick around it.
 
The next fighter for the title should be Khamzat, but Dana kicked him up a weight class for missing weight by such a huge amount.
Gilbert just helped strengthen Colby's title shot claim by losing a close decision to Khamzat, but still not being able to finish a 1 year older Masvidal.

Colby vs Masvidal: (49-46, 50-44, 50-45)
Gilbert vs Masvidal: (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

Is it crazy that we just have to live with Dana giving title shots simply because his close friend likes a fighter? I know we shouldn’t expect professionalism in combat sports, but this seems insane.

Colby is 3 times more popular. Colby gets the title shot. If Colby gets hurt or something weird happens, anything is possible. Colby's next in line. That's it and that's all!

Yes and....? What of it? The gimmick selling to the audience is the important part of the equation. Not who is friends with former Presidents.
