Anyone watch Major League Soccer? I never really got into watching team sports growing up until Toronto got a team in MLS. I thought it was a good opportunity for me to watch our team grow over the years and i would loosely follow the games here and there. I have been paying a lot more attention ever since Toronto finally won in 2017 and although i definitely am no authority on the subject, i would say the quality of MLS has been steadily climbing and it has become (dare i say) exciting.

It's a shame that no one discusses it over here. Anyone have love for MLS in the sportsbar?

It is still rather low-quality, but it is certainly getting better. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect MLS to eventually be on par with the likes of the Dutch/Turkish leagues in the near future.

Seeing teams like ATL United and Orlando City become very popular in markets that don't generally care much for pro sports is a great sign for the health of the league going forward, and I'm seeing a lot of excitement around town for Inter Beckham United Miami FC of Ft. Lauderdale so I'm optimistic about Miami becoming another soccer hotspot.

It’s improving in quality top to bottom and not strictly a “retirement league” anymore but the fact that there’s a salary cap which isn’t the case in any relevant league and really weird rules about stuff like that, that will prevent it from growing much bigger

The offenses are usually better than the defenses from what I’ve seen, that’s where the money goes. so I guess it’s exciting in that way

I have read online about this salary cap thing. I assume it means how much players can be paid? I heard people are torn on that idea but most people think it isn't good for the growth of the league.

It's improving at the top but probably getting worse at the bottom.

There's way too many teams and the talent is getting diluted. There is no country in the world with more than 20 teams in its top division and the MLS is up to 25 with plans of going to 30! This means that a few hundred players that would have otherwise been playing in some semi-pro league are now going to be in MLS.

Which is strange since the salary cap has been amazing for the growth of the NHL. Maybe they're talking about growth as in ''having one or two super teams that push everyone else's shit in like most of the european leagues.''

Yes sir. You can actually explain what I've heard. That's essentially the argument in that the salary cap allows a bit more of an even distribution skill wise.

One issue I am having with the MLS is that there isn't a relegation system like in Europe, unless I'm mistaken? Does the NHL have a relegation system?

I hadn't realized MLS was still going. Is there any team in the Mid-Atlantic region? I never hear about games happening or anything like that.

DC United was one of the charter teams and is still playing. They just got a new stadium too.
