Maintaining full mount...

Hey guys, just did my fourth class yesterday and loving it. We did an exercise at the end of class where we had to try to maintain full mount while the guy tried to escape. I did great against a couple of blue belts and a purple belt, course I am quite heavy at 280. However, there was one guy that was quite a bit smaller(don't know what rank he was) and he tossed me off three times! It was unreal how easy he did it. I figured that I just have a lot to learn, which I know I do, and then I watched him toss the oher guys as well.

Loving the class, I am having some aches and pains that I haven't had in a lot of years HAHA
 
What technique did he use to reverse position? If you can describe how he did his escapes.
 
My favorite way to hold mount is to swim one of my hands under his neck, and grab his lat. From here i turn my shoulder in (cross face its called) the other hand goes out, and I use it to base, Its impossible for him to Knee elbow escape and bump and roll to that side. i dont think it sets up submissions great other than the ezekial choke (dont worry about that now) But if u want to maintain full mount thats the way.
 
Correctly done crossface mount is very hard to escape. Another option is to base your both hands to the sides, not letting him to grap either of them. If he tries elbow escape, just use the crossface technique to stop him (catch his head with your bent arm and start crossfacing).
 
i dont know why i just have never liked the mount much..

I have more of a tendancy to put my knee in the belly.. make them think im going to mount.. they defend and i get their back.

i used to only like the mount/and guard... and now ive shifted to like Sidecontroll and the back..

Honestly, I don't know exactly how he was esaping as far as technique. He was bucking his hips up and twisting. It was just unreal how easily he was doing it. The instructor did say that the guy was crossing his legs so that II couldn't get seated back on him, which put me farther towards his head and of course I didn't have as good of control then. Im gonna seek the guy out next class and get him to show me exactly what he did.

So the crossface is to grab under the head and lay my shoulder across his face? Seems like thats what he had me in at the very end of class when I was on bottom and I finally just gassed out.
 
If you're getting bucked off, I find simply holding his head up with one arm (picture a one-handed thai collar) removes almost all the power from the bucking motion.
 
If he is pushing up in a bench press motion, lean forward more. It makes it very hard for him to support your wieght since he can no longer rely on his pecs. Also stay very loose. If you are stiff as a board, you can be tossed like one. Think heavy!

I train at Relson Gracie Austin Association under black belt Phil Cardella. I am new to the sport so all I can tell you is that the classes seem great to me and that Phil got his black belt from Relson (who is supposedly very difficult to attain a black belt from) and Phil is a professional fighter.

Sit up tall....grabbing them just limits what punches and subs you can do

a great one would be to put your hands out about a foot and a half over his head in line with their shoulders....its a bait. When they grab it, key lock or arm bar
