Everyone seems to be buying into the Maia hype pretty hard. His lose to shields says a lot about how far he can go in the division. If shields couldn't capture ufc gold I don't expect Maia to either. Would love to see him go up against a palharas or lombard

Palhares, Lombard, Askren, Hendricks, Woodley: lot of dream matchups for Maia.

Weidman and Rory are more relevant examples

He took 3 rounds from shields and out grappled him. Taking someone down and taking their back is better than never passing someone's guard after reversing them.

I just don't see what he brings to the table for guys like Hendricks, McDonald, lawler, and Lombard. All guys that have the ability to keep it standing and punish him. See Lombard vs shields

Mark Munoz beat him for fuck's sake
Maia is too one-dimensional to be a champion

At least Maia is finishing top level fighters.

Maia has a great chance against a lot of the welterweights, but I think Carlos Condit is a terrible matchup for him.

I understand how you feel there are fighters out there that can keep it standing and they will win the striking battle.

Maia is a beast and he deserves a tittle shot especially with tic tac father time.. even if, IF he wins the strap he won't keep it that's for sure.

Ideal I would love Maia to win that 1 tittle fight before calling it quits in MMA.

Biased and all I am still impressed about jakes performance against Maia.

That said, I'm happy about Maia's run and would love to see him get a title shot. If not, a big fight is fine.

All the top few contenders in the division have great TDD and submission defense. And Maia doesn't seem to have a gas tank passed round 2. He's going to have a tough time with anyone in the top 5.

Did you even watch the Shields fight? It easily could have gone to Maia, the whole fight came down to whether you favor aggression or control more.

Shields was a worse match up for Maia than just about anybody at 170, world class BJJ combined with excellent wrestling, most top MMA grapplers only have one of the two. Shields could very well be the champ in the post GSP era had he not been cut.

It was a split decision. Shields has beaten the 2 guys fighting in the next title fight as well as the guy many feel was robbed in the last one.

Wonderboy deserves the next shot if he wins, Rory is a much bigger win than anything Maia's done. I don't think Maia could beat Rory or a number of the other bigger guys with good striking. stylistically he's been getting good matchups.

Shields is probably the most underrated fighter in MMA, just because he's not flashy or "exciting". The guy has beaten so many top fighters it's unbelievable, his resume is insane.
