I don't understand the matchmaking for Maia.
First he gets a fight with Koscheck which makes absolutely no sense.
But luckily, it gets cancelled. But then the UFC matches him with Shields? What gives?

If Maia beats Shields, he'll only have one top ten win, Fitch, who is not even in the UFC anymore.

I just can't understand people saying Maia should get the next shot.

I'd say if Lawler manages to beat Rory, If Maia beats Shields, make
Lawler vs. Maia for No.1 contender.

    Shields owned Lawler though.

Maia vs Shields could be a great fight if they actually grappled. But sometimes grapplers tend to get scared to showcase their skills against another grappler so they prefer showcasing their elite k-1 striking skills instead.

He also has a win over Condit. Maia beating Shields would look great on his record.

It'd be a good fight. That's enough for me.

I agree but by that time who gets a shot, GSP have to defend the belt

So let the Hendricks/ gsp winner sit out for 8 months while we get a true number contender? If Maia finishes shields, ill have no problem with him getting the shot.

If gsp wins, he likes to sit out that long anyway.

True. People are looking at this fight like it's the WW Mir vs. Barnett.
That fight never even hit the mat, which is a shame

How is Robbie Lawler even in the conversation? He lost to Lorenz Larkin, moved to WW and had two wins. One guy in the bottom half of the top ten (koscheck) and the other guy ive never even heard of (Bobby Voelker).

Matt Brown, Demian Maia and Rory Macdonald all have MUCH more impressive streaks.

Hasn't he fought like 3 times in the last year? Counting Hendricks next month.

People sleep on Shields but he's never been a guy to look past.

It wasn't an exciting fight but he beat Tyron Woodley in his last bout. Along his career he's beaten a gang of tough guys - Okami, Condit, Lawler, Pyle, Daley, Henderson, Kampmann.

Since when is Jake Shields a gimmie fight?

If Maia's WW run to the title goes:

    DHK > Story > Fitch > Shields

You have to be kidding me you don't see that as a title run in the current welterweight landscape.

I don't think you're being fair to maia.
he was a top 5 MW. he came down, did not demand a top fighter.
Paid his dues against top opponents, and beat them all.

if he beats Shields, he does deserve a top contender or a title shot.
Mostly because the rest of the top opponents either already got their shots or are trying to get back to cotention.

if Lawler beats Rory, i do think he should be ahead of Maia though.

get Him next and then Maia (who can fight once more meanwhile and thuis satisfy even the most demanding fans). Agrreed?

Who do they '"give" GSP then?

I think Maia is the most dangerous contender out there. If you don't agree, pick another fighter for GSP.

I like Maia alot. I think he would beat the current version of GSP 9 times out of 10. The only way though I can see him getting the next shot, is if Condit loses (unlikely) to Brown.

What's your point? He should have fought while injured? Or he should have fought 5 times in 12 months to compensate and risked getting injured again?

I really wonder what you meant.

This. Maia at WW is a beast. Name me any fighter with a better run and overall credentials in the division right now.

On a side note, I wouldn't mind seeing him fight Diaz first. Nick would be a great feather in his cap and solidify his claim for a title shot, especially with the casual fans. Plus I think it could be a great fight. I think Nick is crazy and confident enough to grapple Damian.

Wouldn't even be competitive, actually. I agree with you, sir.
