GSP was awesome, but he perfected his style so well that his fights became incredibly predictable and repetitive. In a sport where "anything can happen" (consider Matt Serra), in GSPs prime, it was pretty clear that not just ANYTHING was gonna happen. This was gonna happen: slick takedown, side control, GNP. Wash, rinse, repeat.
It was also a stroke of bad luck that GSP seemed to lack finishing power, and a matter of surprise and confusion (even to this day) that he couldn't finish submissions. What was up with that shit?
Either way, bad combination of strengths and weaknesses when it comes to entertainment value--legit skill set for unanimous decisions.
Fitch was a committed grinder who genuinely thought that he was the better fighter if he could hold you down. It was a glorious day when Maia held Fitch down and embarrassed him. Fitch had this priceless look on his face that was all like "this is bullshit, all you can do is hold me down."
Fitch won fights fair and square, but Fitch sucked. He's probably the sole reason that Ben Askren isn't in the UFC.
Maia is the man. But let's be real, his fights aren't barn burners.
He needs to throw up some flying triangles and scissor heel-hooks or something if he wants main card treatment.
