I've been a fan of Maia since 2007, and he doesn't cease to amaze me. It seems like he's been a top 10 fighter in two different divisions for the past 7 years. Everyone knows what he's going to do, but few can stop it. Not only that, but he's 38 years old and he continues to improve his game;his takedowns and set ups to the takedowns have improved; his cardio has improved, which is incredible at 38 years old; it's all just extremely impressive. Also, he's one of the most intelligent, honest, and respectful competitors in the sport.

I Love this guy, and I will never understand how people can dislike him. Have a random pic of him in a suit:

I'm loving this old man's title run.

Who do you want him to face next? he either gets a title—which I doubt will happen because UFC—or he gets a number 1 contender fight.

bump

He just beat three highly touted WW prospects in Laflare, Magny, and Gunnar. Give this vet some love.

best use of pure jiu jitsu in modern mma

Where have you seen people dislike him? I always thought he was almost universally loved.

Maia is the reason I switched from MT to MMA. The Sonnen sub was something special. Missed his fight tonight but as I switched on the judges were announcing 30-25, was it really that dominant?

He hit Gunnar in the face, then took him down, out grappled him and wrecked his face for three rounds. Yes.

It was as much of a grapple and ground and pound domination as you will see in MMA without the fight being stopped.

People were saying that Gunnar could keep up with Maia on the ground, but fuck they were wrong.

lol at gunnie fans thinking he had a chance against maia

maia owned him

Nobody hates Maia. He's my fav it's just a shame he will never hold the title unless an ultra one dimensional striker wins it first

Glad to see him win and completely dominate Nelson. World class grappling at its finest.

30-25's against undefeated prospects at damn near 40 years old is respectable...

Guy is a beast. People still have no idea what they're getting into on the ground with him and I think they underestimate his strength most of all.

One of the classiest, most talented fighters on the planet!

War Maia!

I'm a total Maia fanboy. Love the guy.

A throwback BJJ specialist. An everyman. Not the most physically impressive specimen. Yet he gets shit done and kicks ass.

A true martial artist. Best BJJ in MMA.

22-6. Losses to legit competition and only finished once (got caught).

He may not get it but a title shot is not a crazy demand.

The only fighters above him in the rankings are

1 Rory MacDonald (already got his shot)
2 Tyron Woodley (Is he really more deserving than Maia?)
3 Johny Hendricks (no to another rematch)
4 Carlos Condit (fighting for the title next)
5 Matt Brown (no)

Gunnar got outclassed in the ground his face is hurting right now.

It was like a master teaching a disciple.

It sure was! :) I really enjoyed this fight and was rooting for Maia. I was expecting Gunni to have a lot more to offer offensively, but it was still an enjoyable grappling match.

I thought Gunnar would have more to offer too, but it was definitely enjoyable, and you gotta give Maia credit for never stopping.

Also, Maia calling out the fallacious UFC rankings was completely on point.

he never stood a chance on the ground, the only hope he had was to stick and move. The only guy at 170 I legit think could give Maia a hard time on the ground is Palhares.

I always wanted to see that fight, but it's too bad it can't happen anytime soon.

Seeing all this maia appreciation makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I'm a huge Maia fan but I didn't think he would dominate Gunnar as badly as he did. His GnP surprised me.
