I agree with your statement about Western populations losing the ability to properly digest via low levels of HCL. When it comes to magnesium, or any other mineral for that matter, I honestly think one would be splitting hairs by being too concerned about it's molecular weight. Most guys here strive to eat a healthy diet of mixed greens, meat, dairy, etc, and added supplementation more than adequately covers what's needed, IMO.
Other than a paper I wrote in college on MgSO4 and couple of studies regarding bioavailability, I have to admit I haven't read a whole lot on utilization in athletes. The rumor, be it true or not, that athletes are deficient, does warrant supplementation, though.
