France's Macron under fire after aide caught hitting May Day protester
Alexandre Benalla, one of Macron's staff top security guy, was observing a police operation and then decided to take some of the police's gear and to beat on at least two peaceful protesters. He ran away as soon as he realized he was caught on tape. Macron's staff was informed and discreetly suspended the guy for two weeks, greeting him back right after that and even giving him a big role in the French Team security when they returned with the World Cup. Nobody knew about it for two months, until Le Monde recognized him on the video.
The French law is pretty clear, civil servants and senior officers absolutely have to report any crime or felony that they know about. Now that Alexandre Benalla has been identified, there is a whole shitstorm rising for how they handled the situation without ever reporting it to a judge. Assaulting people while wearing police gear and not being actually into law enforcement is pretty serious.
The judges just opened a case and everybody is now trying to find who knew and kept it secret.
Edit : Alexandre Benalla is now in police custody and is going to be fired. But that's not the end of it, as it is now clear that policemen have been told to edit all the security cameras that filmed the scene and to send it to Benalla. So now it's not just about being discreet about that incident, but there was clearly a full cover-up organised by the presidential staff.

(No English sources yet for the cover-up)
