First Reviews for M. Night Shyamalan's SPLIT are Positive

The Hollywood Reporter - Genre fans should embrace what is arguably the director’s most satisfying picture since The Sixth Sense. In some quarters, it will generate talk of a comeback for a filmmaker who has suffered both critical drubbing and box office humiliation over the past decade. Good

Collider - While the film’s final moments add an extra WTF delight that will prove rewarding to career-long viewers of Shyamalan’s work, it is essentially a tremendously sympathetic film about those who have suffered trauma and the strength it gives them. Do yourself a favor and don’t seek out the twist, because the movie is more than that. Shyamalan is back, baby, and the best he’s been in decades. B

The Guardian - It is a full and satisfying film that, if you stopped watching 18 seconds before the conclusion, would still suit as a juicy bit of smart horror. It nicely rides the line between exploitation and serious commentary about the strength gained from overcoming adversity. 4/5

Screen Crush - Shyamalan has fully delivered on that promise with Split, an incredibly thoughtful and thought-provoking thriller. Although occasionally heavy-handed, Shyamalan’s latest is his most considerate and effective film in years, with a startling emotional core. 8/10

James McAvoy is Crazy Creepy in M. Night Shyamalan’s New Thriller SPLIT

Universal has unveiled the first trailer for Split, the latest film from writer/director M. Night Shyamalan, and it puts Shyamalan squarely back in psychological thriller mode. The film stars James McAvoy as Kevin, a man who abducts three teenage girls who suddenly realize that Kevin is one of 23 personalities displayed by McAvoy’s character, who suffers from a severe case of Multiple Personality Disorder.

The picture reunites Shyamalan with producer Jason Blum, who produced the Sixth Sense filmmaker’s first foray into found footage, The Visit. McAvoy looks to be turning in a pretty stunning performance here. Moreover, the cast is filled out by a number of talented young actresses, including The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy.

While Shyamalan has certainly lost some of his luster, Split actually looks promising. There are shades of 10 Cloverfield Lane in the wake of that movie’s release, but this also could be Shyamalan’s most overt homage to Alfred Hitchcock yet. The film opens in theaters on January 20th.

I'm pretty sure I have 24 different personalities on Sherdog. Yes, this does look promising though. James looks on point...has a creepy vibe I like, etc. Hopefully the trailer doesn't contain all the strong moments, been fooled by that shit a few times (I'm looking at you 'The Happening').

I bet it'll turn out that he and the other 22 personalities are all the manifestation of one of those three kidnapped girls who does have DID/MPD.

Not enough payoff. It was like smelling a good meal but not getting a bite.

I think he's made a slight change though from a marketing perspective, in order to keep making movies he's learned to make smaller budget suspenseful/horror type movies like the visit which usually do well in terms of making profits...i mean he's still gonna have his same gimmicks but i think people who know what he's about will stay away if they don't like him. he's never really evolved as a filmmaker but his style I think fits these lower budget smaller suspense/horror movies, like he's a bigger fish in this smaller pond
