I have 2 friends who work for Cisco. Theyre roommates. Their other roommate works for cisco as well. We all went out for drinks one night and got to talking about how they got their jobs. They started busting the roomates balls because he apparently lied on his resume about getting his bachelors from uc Berkeley, when in reality he has no college degree. I was shocked. His guy has been working at cisco, making a 6 figure salary, plus bonuses for 3 years and he just flat out lied on his resume regarding his education. Got me thinking about if the student loans were worth it

He lucky that his employer is a lazy bum and didn't double check his resume and references. If he's caught, he could goto jail. It is illegal to lie about your education. Everything else is fine to lie about on the resume.

And good job ratting your friend out. I'm sure there's some high rank cisco staff here who will now cross check all their employees.

Bad idea. Unless it's a company that doesn't care, a lot of companies will fact check every single thing you put on a resume. I remember a few years back a potential employee put down he had a A+ certificate. It wasn't required for the job but they still checked to see if the had it. He didn't and he didn't get the job for lying.

If you put something down, make sure you can back it up.

Definitely lucky. Most places require official transcripts be mailed directly to them.

Wasnt aware that it was illegal. Why is lying About education illegal over experience?

Well, Cisco are idiots. Your friend has a 'big' mouth when he gets drunk. I'll bet he will be out of a job in 6 months. Someone is going to drop a 'dime' to management or Human Resources and have his position taken.

on my resume I have it stated that I'm a Sherdog mod.

Thank you. Uc berkely? Should be easy enough to cross reference in our data base. Can you pm me his name? Would make it easier.
We have sued for retro pay in the past in these instances.

Resumes are seldom checked. The city hired a man to run their fine arts center. He held similar positions before while claiming to have a bachelors and a masters degree. The city didn't check but somebody else did. The man insisted he thought he had those degrees. As far as I know you get a diploma when you earn those degrees.

If he gets caught he can get fired. It happened to my co-worker. They found out he had no degree after working with us for 3 years, then they called himinto the office in morning and fired him on the spot. It's no joke.

Get a college degree of you can. It will bring you to the next level. Having just a college degree today is like having just highschool 30 years ago.

The only field I experienced where no degree is needed and you can make a good living is computer programming.

Half the guys i work with lied about their credentials including my boss. Its more common than you think

Yes, the student loans are worth it, especially if you go to Berkeley. Of course, a lot depends on what degree you get. And if you’re too old, you won’t have enough time in your life to see a return on that investment.
But even if you didn’t see a return; you would just be paying a little bit toward your loan for the rest of your life while having much better job prospects and probably a bigger house.

Badass!

I've never outright lied on a resume, but I have taken creative liberties with certain job titles & descriptions. For instance if you're an intern whose job is picking up trash in the shop and putting tools away you can write it down as "shop environmental & safety specialist" which is totally true and sounds way better than what it actually is.

How would a place like cisco not check that? LOL.

I knew a guy once that served in the Korean War and was assigned to dig trenches with his Lietenant. One day artillery shells reigned down on them, killing the liteneant and injuring my aquantance. In the confusion that followed, this guy swapped dog tags with his Lietenant and was everntuallu granted leave to return home. He used that alias to lead a new life an ultimately become one of the best Ad Men in New York City.

Why stop at fabricating a resume when you can take an man's entire identify?

I'm fortunate that I chose to teach myself programming because now at 31, having no education beyond a year 11 failure, it's the sole reason I'm living well.

I have a lot of friends I grew up with that can't get out of the min wage/labourer game who have the same education as me.

My advice, don't plan on getting lucky, find a clear path and pursue it relentlessly.
