Basically, the title says it all. I'm new to the area, trained BJJ for two years previously, but haven't trained in about 3.

The problem is, I'm in grad school and can't afford a particularly expensive monthly fee. Reaction MMA sounds like a good, professional place to train (http://www.teamreactionmma.com/) but it looks like they charge 85/month for a 1 year commitment, which is probably a bit out of my price range.

I'm not looking to compete or anything, just to learn and stay in shape - but I also don't want to find a cheap school that has a bogus instructor.

Edit: I am able to commute outside of Lexington, but not as far as, say, Louisville.

Also I haven't posted on the grappling forum for about that same 3 year gap. Interested to see if anyone remembers me. Also, what in the world is vCash?

vCash is for placing bets with the vBookie. See the link on the lower red bar near the top of the page.

Lexington, KY...hmm sorry I can't recommend anyone there. If you were able to make it to Louisville I could tell you about all the schools in this area as I've trained with all of them or know them personally.

A quick Google search brought up the ReactionMMA place, but also a gym called "Sons of Siam". It may be worth looking into. I'm not sure how interested you are in judo but that is another option.

Another option may be to travel to Frankfort. Its not as far as the drive to Louisville. I can't speak for these guys, but the head instructor has his black belt under Carlson Gracie Jr. and his black belt in judo. In addition Frankfort is where the KY State Troopers are headquartered. There are bound to be quite a few guys who train in that area. http://valhallaacademy.com/instructor/

Good luck finding a place to train man.

Hey I hadn't noticed that place in Frankfort! About a 40 minute drive from me, pretty doable. It sounds like a great gym, I think I'll give them a call and see how pricey they are. Thanks for the find.

Check out four seasons mma in Lexington. The jiujitsu coach is a 2 stripe black belt under Carlson Gracie Jr. named Michael ODonnell. It is the same association as Brian Jones and everyone works very closely together to improve the jiu jitsu here in Kentucky.

I am personally a 4 stripe purple under Mike out of Pikeville. We train in Pikeville under a very good Brown belt under Mike named Sidney Cline. Carlson Gracie Jr. also comes in at least twice a year for evals/seminars and we generally have a great time.

Gandie, do you happen to know ~what they charge? Sounds like a great gym, but theyre hard to get a hold of.

Not sure on their pricing since I go to an affiliate gym. You can find them on facebook at 4seasonsmma. They have some posters with phone numbers you can call. You could also call Brian Jones and he could probably tell you the pricing or get you in touch with someone who can.

just up the road in stanton, ky their is a good team of guys, they charge less than $85 and plenty of good guys to work with...

in that area you have reaction, 4 seasons, iron cobra (stanton), their are a few other places around richmond, but if you want affordable iron cobra would be my choice. good guys too! shoot a text to david crowe at 606-481-2203, tell him jarvis sent you

Thanks for the help everyone. The Valhalla Academy sounds just excellent after talking to them, but it's just a bit of a drive - probably still doable, but I'm going to get in touch with 4 Seasons too.

I will be happy to see you around when I am there. I am gonna try to stop in tomorrow actually. My daughter is having a dental procedure done in Ohio tuesday so gonna stop by and try to get a private from Mike. We also have a promotion/seminar coming up sometime in March.

I am moving to Lexington here in the next month or so. I am about to graduate college with a homeland security degree, and am aiming to have a future in law enforcement or possibly even the military. I haven't been as active in the past few years, but I have always been pretty athletic for my size. I am a rather big guy, 6'3" around 240 lbs. I have no experience in any style of BJJ, wrestling, or MMA, but I am looking to start. I think a gym with boxing or Muay Thai and wrestling are my main priorities. I am looking to develop my stand up and ground skills to improve my self defense capabilities. I am looking for any recommendations on gyms in or around the Lexington, KY area.

From my own search, I read about Four Seasons MMA in Lexington and AFS Academy in Richmond. Closer to Cincinnati, there is Son of Siam and in Cincinnati there is Jorge Gurgel MMA. I have found many other gyms, but their main priority is usually BJJ, which I want to do as well, it just isn't my main area of focus.

Any kind of help or information is greatly appreciated!
