I have searched and searched and all I found was Mario Sperry's. But his stuff is kind of expensive. Can anyone recommend any others? thanks

Check out Mauricio "Tinguinha" Mariano's open guard series DVDs.

Exactly. Tinguinha has put out 3 very good open guard dvds.

    1) Spider Guard
    2) Cross Guard
    3) Sitting up Guard

They're very comprehensive and should be exactly what you're looking for. You can purchase them at:

I never heard of a cross guard. Is the sitting up guard applicable to no-gi as well?

Don't go with Tinguinha if you are training esp. no gi. It depends a lot on the gi grips. Better, IMO, Kesting: Butterfly and Garcia: No Gi.

Only the Spider Guard depends heavily upon gi grips. You can play cross guard and sitting up guard (butterfly guard) without a gi. All of the Gracie Barra guys play these guards all the time at no gi competitions. Watch Pe de Pano's matches if you want to see cross guard in action.
