short hooks/uppercuts are easy, but how do you master the long hook/uppercut? Kinda hard to generate power from your hip because the arm is so far out there.

Go to youtube. Search for Chuck Liddell and power. There's a good vid with him showin' how he does a power right hand, which he loops around in basically a low hook.

Agreed it is a tricky punch I have a hard time getting my head around. I always feels that I am throwing borderline haymakers, propably because I am, when I try the long hooks.
That im a short stocky fuck propably adds to my problems with it. But its something that I want to get better at.

On that video he talks about not extending the arm 'past your power'.

I like to throw a left hook while making a step backwards , works pretty good :D

Not pretty good, pretty well... and yes, it's usually my go-to punch when someone is coming in swinging and I don't want to be close. It's the best way to avoid the clinch if you ask me.

The reason being you could step back on a left hook is because your left foot is the anchor as you pivot the punch, so your right foot (hind foot) can begin that step back.

some cma styles specialize in long hooks/uppercuts. they are somewhat similar to the chuck liddel video.
