Long Distance Running w/ Cadence

I've read some brief statements off of cross country forums but haven't reached a definitive conclusion as to how one should pace oneself in terms of strides per X distance. I've only really toyed with the idea using my ipod as a timer and counting every other stride.
 
You can download mp3s with a cadence in the background.
There are websites (can't remember the name of a particular one), that has different running cadences that are in line with the music. I've seen 80 up to 120.
