I do maintenance on a bunch of rental properties. We only use deadbolt locks. No locking door knobs. That way the doors can only locked be with a key from the outside. Then the only way people can get locked out is if they lose their key.

Cuts down on lock out calls by like 95%. Most people lock themselves out when they accidentally shut the door with the knob locked.

I had one drunk asshole lose his key twice in one night. First time he came knocking on my door late at night with 2 cops that were making sure he made it home safe. Then at 6am he somehow managed to lock himself out again. I was so pissed.

I was the drunk asshole tonight. I went out to buy some beer and realized I fucked up when I came back. Should never use the knob lock. First time this has happened to me though.

It was a bit embarrassing since it's a new landlord who just bought the building 2 weeks ago. Had to call her at 10 PM on a saturday night. I felt so bad lol.

Fourtunately she didn't live too far away. I offered her some cash for the trouble but she refused.
