Living In Las Vegas (possible move)

*Keep your Vegas trip stories out of this thread please, looking for local only advice.*

Hey Guys I have seen some of the users here live in vegas. I wanted to get a feel of how it is to live there. I would be moving from LA. I work in the IT/networking sector but also have a lot of experience in music/livesound/AV. Summer probably isnt the best time to ask but your only 6 degrees hotter than LA right now.

-Where are the best towns to buy property?
-Good to work for casinos? If not where?
-Traffic
-how living in NV is (laws, tax etc....)
-current housing market (looking at houses around 210-230k if not cheaper)

Obviously there is a lot of entertainment. I am not looking to have kids anytime soon so thats not an issue. My boss just bought a house out there then backed out cause he said the market looks like it will crash soon. I wanted to get some advise from people who live out there. Share away sherdogs.
Yo make sure you go to the bellagio with your boys!! What happens in vegas stays im vegas! Go for 3 days only cuz 1 week in vegas is way too long.. check out the Broadway shows!

If I moved to Vegas it would be in select areas of Henderson or in/near Summerlin. Likely that has a good school district. I guess it would also depend on where I worked. I have a realy close friend and cousin that live in Henderson, but is pretty deep in there. Unless I worked in Henderson I'm not sure if I could live that deep in.

Edit: Just saw your budget for housing. Not sure if you can get much (I'm talking single family home) in that price range, maybe a small place in the not most ideal parts of those areas.

MGM is probably my favorite overall.

Always a great time there.

Not sure if it's still around, but Drai's is a great after hours club.

Good luck, dude.

You all cannot read.

Too cold for me in the winters. Very dry and no natural vegetation at all. Great nightlife and entertainment. Overall I’d say LA is a lot better. To me, trees, greenery, rain, bodies of water, etc. are very important. Vegas has none of that. Could never live there.
LA is now an over populated shit hole I cannot afford to buy a house in right now. I plan on coming back in a few years after I have my networking career on lock and can actually afford to live here and buy a house. The transplants that come and go get raped out here and leave. Almost no one that comes anymore can survive.

Spent my whole life here.

I prefer the west side by far (summerlin).

Henderson has ridiculous traffic.

Don't even think about moving to North Las Vegas

AV work should be easy to find but may be seasonal. One off thing about working in Vegas is there aren't a whole lot of companies to work for if you work on the strip. For example.if you get fired from an MGM property you basically can't work in half the city. Housing prices are high my house is 2.5x what I payed for it 7 years ago
This is all about what I have heard. I know you have been there a while so Im interested in hearing more if you care to elaborate. Im looking more into computer networking which is how all the slots work and shit so it should be pretty easy to get into that kinda work. I have heard the same about working on the strip.

Also, How hard would you say it is to control your vices? I plan on living just far enough that it wont be easy to get to the casinos but can go if I want to.

I have seen many 2 bedroom houses around 210K-230k and they seem to be falling, Do you think I can find a nice place in summerlin or surrounding area for this much?

I appreciate everyone that read the TS and responded with helpful comments. You guys keep the mayberry classy!

My Sister and her Family moved from the Hoh Rainforest area of Washington State to Henderson, Nevada and apparently likes the area.
Can’t imagine that perydine shift, give me the Forest brothers.

to be honest, i've been contemplating leaving the entire state of california. i make good money and can save a decent amount of money, but when i see what i can afford in other areas of the country, it really makes me want to try out other areas of this vast country. i only bring it up to say that you shouldn't restrict yourself to certain areas. keep an open mind to other possibilities. i know that's what i'm doing, anyway.

That type of work should be easy to find

Check out the mountains edge area for houses around that price

As far as controlling your bices it really is different than any other city. People get off of work at 5 am and go out drinking.

Think it would be fun to live near the strip in one of the condo towers like Turnberry.

My parents live there. Henderson is a nice area.

LVMPD does not mess around. Crime rate is fairly high in lots of the city, especially North Las Vegas.

i dunno bro vegas looks pretty skechy
i had soem friends all geta hosue in henderson and asked me to take the 4th bedroom
2 months later they all hate each other and its still 120 degrees
id ratrher live in the boonies with my cats in NH lol

I know a drug kingpin out in Vegas. Great guy. Would move there.

Trulia has a bunch of properties in henderson with less than $1 per square ft.

You want to be in Summerlin, Henderson, or Northwest Las Vegas, NOT North Las Vegas.

What kind of size home are looking for? 210-230k doesn't go that far in Vegas, especially because the housing market is on the rise. I guess it depends on where you're coming from. For example, Texas 230k and Vegas 230k are very different. It's only going to get worse with the Raiders move and a lot of Californians moving here for one reason or the other. I can give you a realtor's name if you need it. She's a hard worker and gets stuff done.

Traffic sucks and it's everywhere. They're trying to anticipate just how big Vegas will get with everyone moving here, and so there's construction everywhere. The 215 and the 95 are my preferred method of traveling. I-15 sucks big ol donkey balls.

I went to Vegas for the WSOP. Which hotel are you planning on staying at TS?

Retro Sherdog would have had 3 pages of posts with unwanted stories to piss off the TS. You new people sicken me.

This. North Las.Vegas is a shithole

I lived in a long stay hotel the Siegel suites on Charleston by north 30th st for a month. 210k could easily rent you a room there for a while and you could save money with the free WiFi. The corner store has a nice selection of malt liquor.
