Live on upper floor in an old building with wooden floors -- Can I use a barbell in the apartment?

I live in NYC in an old, 3rd floor building apartment. Is it possible for me to strength train in it with a Rogue SML Rack and Barbell?

I plan to only train some type of deadlift pull and squat (front squat) since I can't just drop the barbell and weight if I'm about to fail... I also plan to buy the safety arms along with the Rogue SML. The upper body I'll be using the pull up bar that the SML comes with and probably use Rings to do inverted rows. The rest of my upper body movements will bebodyweight/advance gymanstics type training from the book Overcoming Gravity by Steve Low.

My goal is to go from current weight of 140 - 150 lbs to 190 - 200 lbs... I also want to train for overall athleticism and function in everyday activities. I plan to take up Martial Arts along with my strength training, so I'll be utilizing Tactical Barbell, Juggernaut Method or something along those lines of routine for deadlifts and legs... I'll be using either Tactical Barbell 2, Ross Enamait's stuff or Joel Jamieson stuff for conditioning... Grip training I'll also use Ross Enamait's book on grip training...

What do you guys think and suggest?

Tldr.

Not to mention that in the past you have been a serious "ask hole". Basically asking for advice then arguing with every piece of advice people give you like you don't actually want advice.

But fuck it I'll tell you what I told you before, find an mma gym that has some strength equipment. Most every mma, bjj, wrestling, Muay Thai gym I've been to has weights and members are allowed to use them anytime.

I want to focus on overall "functional" strength. Functional for everyday situations, as in being strong, powerful and quick - basically athletic... I also plan on taking up martial arts that are useful in everyday situation such as self defense and survival ( if shit ever hit the fan in society)... I'm looking at BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing and maybe Judo eventually. I might even just simply take Combat Sambo. From their I'll blend them into a mixture and train mma. I live in NYC BTW.

My issue is that I can't afford a gym membership monthly plus pay for an art(s)... Also, I'm going to be moving around alot due to my situation.

Now, I wanna use Front Squats and Deadlifts for lower body. Upper Body I'll do Advanced bodyweight/some gymnastics style training (Rings and Parallette training)... I obviously need a barbell to accomplish maximum strength potential. Issue is that I live in NYC and upper floor apartment. I am moving from here to rent a room from someone ( I won't know them). This leads to being an issue due to wooden floors and the current building being old.

I planned on buying a SML squat half rack from Rogue, since it can allow me to do front squats. I figured that I can maybe replace the deadlift for RDL'S, but I don't know if it's a worthy replacement for my goals. The SML also has a pull up bar attachment. I can't use a doorway pull up bar when I rent rooms in the future. The owners of the apartment/roommate won't allow it... I might be able to use a doorway bar in my grandma's house (where I'm staying temporarily now) but I'm going to be moving soon, so I'm thinking about long term.

I figured maybe the Ironmaster 165 lb each pair of adjustable dumbbell would be worth while, but that's only 330 lbs, which eventually I'll outgrow. Remember that I'm using weights for squats and Deadlifts. I plan on using advance bodyweight movements for upper body.

My resources for training are going to be Overcoming Gravity for upper body. For lower body and Deadlifts, I'll be using Tactical Barbell, and might check 5/3/1 or a couple other barbell resources, but nothing looks like it can top TB for my goals since I'll be participating in Martial Arts and maybe a sport... Aside from TB, Juggernaut Method might be worth it but I haven't read it to know... On the conditioning side of things, I'm going to use Ross's books since I literally have all his books. Including his grip training book, which I will he using for my grip routine. I might also check out Joel Jamieson stuff, but it might be pointless since I already have Ross's stuff. What do you guys think?

I haven't workout in a long time, so I'm currently VERY weak. Especially since I lost a lot of weight. I recently been using (last week) on Jailhouse Strong by Josh Bryant book to gain my base strength while I'm figuring out what to do with equipment. I'm using all bodyweight stuff... My numbers are pathetic...

I also forgot to mention that I'm trying to bulk and gain weight. A LOT of weight... I'm currently between 140 to 150 lbs... Used to be 160 lbs... I wanna reach 190 to 200 lbs... I plane to eat 3500 to 4000 calories of "clean food" to reach that goal hopefully within a year, but realistically 2 to 2.5 years that can happen since it is a 40 to 60 lb bulk...

So, with all this said -- what do you guys suggest? What advice do you have? I really want to buy the Rogue SML and a barbell with plates but the living situation is messing me up... Ironmaster adjustable Dumbbells that go to 165 lb each will cost $1,000 plus... I can buy the SML Rogue stand with the essential add on and pull up bar for $500 to 600, then buy a barbell and plates which will equate the the same price as the Ironmaster Dumbbells which will be outgrown ( not anytime soon due to my strength but I'm thinking long term and economically). I rather make wise purchases...

So PLEASE give some solid advice. Thank guys.

So based on the OP, you haven't trained in MMA, or done any combat sport(s) yet?

As you said, you're pretty weak and are looking to gain. I personally think you should focus on lifting and strengthening yourself overall. Also, just because you pound down all those calories doesn't mean you'll be gaining all muscle even if you're hitting the weight hard and eating diligently.
I suggest you look to do a lean bulk (0.5lb gain per week). Also if what you said about losing weight and being on a deficit for that long is true, its possible that your metabolism might be fucked and most of those 3500-4000 calories will end up as fat regardless if its "clean" or not. Find out your TDEE (maintenance) from an online calculator, test it out for a week. If its accurate, add 250 calories and that should be your calories for the bulk.

Also I'm not from NY so I don't know how expensive commercial gyms are, but are they? Aren't gym memberships around $40-70 a month (when you do the math working out the monthly fees based on the contract). Not to sound like a dick, but do you have a stable job? The fees for both gyms shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Anyways, back to the matter at hand, so I would recommend you to go on a controlled / lean bulk while doing a strength training program like starting strength, 531, etc. Be sure to rest well as well. You really grow and progress when you rest, I would say its just as important than the training itself. If you want to add conditioning / cardio work, you can do it on the rest days, you'll obviously incorporate and adjust your routine depending on your schedule.

Also, there are alot of MMA gyms around, there's no need to pay for 3 different single discipline gyms and self-attempt to blend them when you can train at a MMA gym with experienced coaches on that matter.

If by some chance you really cannot afford a membership of any kind, I would suggest a set of power blocks adjustable dumbbells and an adjustable bench.

Sure, you will outgrow them. But the dumbbells are always good to have around the house. You will outgrow them for squats before you outgrow them for the other exercises.

You know, Planet Fitness is 10 bucks a month. It's better than nothing.

Lol i love borimac threads

The mma gym i used to train at cost $30/wk to attend as many classes as you want, use the mats with your friends outside class times and access to a 'normal' gym with weights and cardio equipment. Find a place like that.

Basically, I WANNA get the SML Rogue stand. I want to know if it's worth buying the Stand and barbell set, especially being that I live on a 3rd floor apartment and will be renting rooms in the future from stranger?

Yes it's worth it, I use a similar set up on the 4th floor of a shitty apartment in the middle of a massive Chinese city.

No problems. People put waterbeds, aquariums and pianos and shitnlike that in apartments with no problem So you'll be fine.

Rouge stuff is awesome too. When I get back to the states, rogue will be getting a few thousand dollars of mine.

HELL YEA... Rogue has alotta sexy shit... My worry is doing stuff like deadlifts or if when I place the bar on the rack after sets of front squats.

You really pathetic. Make a decision for yourself ffs.

Cut the deadlifts it will make too much noise. You will generally make enough strength gains with squats.
I own a power rack, but also bought squat stands. Just buy a cheap light set of stands(or make them) and try not to tip them. I chuck these in my car with a bench, my bar/weights and I have a mobile gym. Add some rings and find a tree and you have all you will ever need.

Stick to tactical barbell as is. DO NOT try and do multiple programs with it. You will not achieve what you are after.
You will probably ignore this, but I will guarantee you will have better results doing tactical barbell with the bare minimums, consistently over a solid year, than you will if you mix and match.

Skip deadlifts???? What???? That's terrible advice...

Just get some puzzle matts for the floor. I have a tile floor and lift on it no problem. Puzzle matts are cheap.

As far as deadlifts, as a courtesy, personally, I would not do them. Sub in some LBBS, Rack Pulls and Good Mornings, if it were me.

I don't want to be the jackass that's deadlifting on anything above the 1st living floor.

I agree. I basically came here for advice on alternative exercises to a regualr deadlift. I'd hate to be that guy... Plus, I don't wanna get kicked out. If you think about it though, I'm only doing it for a few sets 2 to 3 times a week... But still...

Would the alternatives u suggested cause any ruckus or noise for my neighbors? I live with a family memeber's for now, but plan on renting a room soon. The owner of the apartments always live in the apartment. I'm basically a roommate, so I wouldn't want them to kick me out. What do you think?
