Lionsgate Making Live-Action NARUTO Movie with Michael Gracey to Direct

Lionsgate has signed Michael Gracey to direct an adaptation of the popular Japanese manga series Naruto.

The studio is in negotiations for the film rights to the Naruto series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, first published in 1997. The manga, which has sold more than 200 million copies in print, follows adolescent ninja Naruto Uzumaki, who dreams of becoming the village ninja, the community’s protector and leader.

Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad are producing through Arad Productions. Erik Feig, Geoff Shaveitz and Kelly O’Malley will oversee for the studio.

Naruto has generated an anime series in Japan that premiered in 2002 and lasted 220 episodes, while the Naruto: Shippuden sequel has been airing since 2007. In addition to the anime series, Studio Pierrot has developed 10 movies.

Gracey is a former visual effects specialist who has moved into directing. He’s been attached to several studio projects that are in development — Universal’s adaptation of the New York Times best-seller "Daughter of Smoke and Bone," his Elton John biopic Rocketman with Tom Hardy attached and Fox’s P.T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman on Earth.

Lionsgate Ramping Up Live-Action ‘Naruto’ Movie with Michael Gracey to Direct

NARUTO Creator Masashi Kishimoto Involved with Lionsgate's Live-Action Movie

Roughly a year and a half ago, it was reported that a live-action Naruto adaptation was in the works from Lionsgate with Michael Gracey directing.

Fans were understandably apprehensive about the project considering that earlier anime adaptation efforts like the ill-fated Dragonball: Evolution fiasco have not come close to living up to the animated originals.

However, with Rupert Sanders‘ Ghost in the Shell and Adam Wingard‘s Death Note features due out in 2017, there’s hope that Hollywood is on the right track for pulling these adaptations off in a satisfying way.

Today, Naruto fans should have new hope for Lionsgate’s live-action adaptation because manga illustrator/writer/creator Masashi Kishimoto is going to be involved in the production. Anime News Network reports as much following this past weekend’s Jump Fest.

The annual anime/manga exposition sponsored by Shueisha included an appearance from Kishimoto to promote the new Boruto anime series due in April 2017. He also confirmed his involvement in the new Naruto movie and showed pre-production art to the attendees.

‘Naruto’ Creator Masashi Kishimoto Lends a Hand to the Live-Action Movie

Here's hoping they don't white wash the cast....

Naruto is blonde though. The Full Metal Alchemist live action trailer looks hilarious with a Japanese guy with blonde hair.
True, but it could be a lot worse. I mean, people were pissing and moaning about Scarlett Johansson in Ghost in the Shell and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.

Oh boy. This does not translate to live action well. Gonna be another Last Airbender in the making.

Please god no. The last live action movie I seen was attack of the titans... Shitty

The amount of special effects they would need to match the Naruto anime calls for a blockbuster-level budget.

No one is going to allow that type of budget for an adaptation for this abortion of an anime series

omg! please don't turn this into dragonball evolution

I liked the manga, but I can't imagine a live action adaptation that isn't shit.

Haha I see I'm not the only DBZ fan who feels Naruto is a straight up rip-off.

Naruto was good very early on. Winning fights using stealth and intellect. I liked it, especially the Zabuza fights. That shit went out the window so fast. Orochimaru's body can just do random shit based on what the plot wants at the time.

Uchihas are basically the Saiyans of the story. They get mad and pull the most random power-ups out of their ass. "Oh, you can do so and so? Good thing I conveniently have this special eye technique that can specifically counter whatever you just did (see Kabuto vs Sasuke/Itachi).

By the end, Naruto even becomes a damn Super Saiyan.

The art style in the manga is also reminiscent of Toriyama and the color pallet for Naruto and Sasuke just screams SSJ Goku and non-SSJ Vegeta.

It's not a rip off of DBZ. It like Dragonball is a shounen manga which follows certain formula for plots.

After the first arc, the writer shit the bed. I'm not even going to go there.

Two things I'll leave are 1) power levels should have remained pre susanno and pre sage/kyuubi complete control. 2) no Nagato and skipped right into Obito/Madara and axe out Kaguya and bring Sasuke as more relevant character.
