I'm trying to compile a list of things that would affect grappling performance, from the least to the greatest.

Top 5 for me personally would be...

1) G/f problems. My mind is never clear when girlfriend issues are going on.
2) Being sick/injured.
3) Simply not having grappled for a while (over 2 weeks).
4) Lack of sleep.
5) Mentally absent from practice.

I'd appreciate other's opinions.

In no particular order

Genetics
Diet
Size
Responsibilities
Not training hard
Not training frequently
Instructors/ training partners
Age
Chronic injuries

I am sure there are more

Switch two to number one, and insert "not eating enough/anything before class" as the third and you've got it.

Not getting your heart rate high enough in practice then expecting to compete at a fast rate. For most, the results are not good going from training "hard" at 160bpm to competing at a pace that might put you at 180+ bpm.

A focus on winning vs. learning in practice
Lack of self-analyzing
Looking for the next "magic" technique
Not drilling
Time on the mats

If you're a teenager or 20-something who can train 4-5 nights a week, enjoy it now while you can. Adult life + family = everything else coming a distant third.

For me lately.

1) Unemployment.

2) Diet.

3) Eczema.

Relationship problems can definitely carry over into jiujitsu. I remember when my ex and I were going through things or even post breakup, training was really hard. I lost a lot of motivation and couldn't focus.

Other things that effect me are my diet, amount of sleep, school work, and sometimes just my mood. All fairly normal.

Whatever books/articles/videos I watch play some part in my grappling performance. If I'm reading a lot of stuff about play based exercise/fitness, "keeping it playful" and other things like that, I tend to have a more relaxed approach to training. If I'm reading more about Dan Gable, or sports psychology, or reading wrestling books I have a more "hard work" approach to training and tend to train harder and more seriously.

must wear the latest limited edition gis.

i won't be caught dead wearing fuji.

those are important factors to me.

I train in a fasted state regularly. I prefer it.

So I would say that your second part is largely personal preference.

being bloated and farting every time you get squeezed

for the people who say girlfriend problems affect your training,do you actually train or does it make you skip training altogether? if it makes you skip,i would say just force yourself through the doors of the academy and the rest will take care of itself

a couple weeks ago me and my girlfriend were having a HUGE fight, and arguing over text right up until the point i lined up to start class...2 hours later i had completely forgotten about all of it until i checked my phone on the way home

my last meal is usually a good 5 hours before practice and I prefer it that way

I feel lighter, clear headed, and will not fart on someone by accident

I'm also about 20 lbs overweight, so it's not like I don't have reserves to run on
