This is a really old series written by Dennis Potter, there have also been other series' from him in the same vein.
They all look like normal dramas then all of the sudden everyone breaks out in song and dance, then at the end of the song everything returns to normal again.
Apparently it was Ewan McGregor's first acting role as he was not long out of school.[dunno if that is true?]

Anyway the blonde woman in this show is so gorgeous, one of my all-time favourite looking tv characters.
