I suppose this, or similar has been posted before but (at the risk of being flamed) I was thinking about how squeezing in a light middleweight division would open up possibilities for some of our favorite fighters to fight it out for the honour of holding (or having held) titles in two weight classes. This is the current weight division and the size of the bracket (in pounds) Flyweight...........125 Bantamweight.....135......10 Featherweight.....145......10 Lightweight.........155......10 Welterweight.......170......15 Middleweight.......185......15 L Heavyweight.....205......20 Heavyweight.......265......60 But what about this? ... Flyweight.............125 Bantamweight.......135.......10 Featherweight.......145.......10 Lightweight...........155.......10 Welterweight........167.5....12.5 Light Middlewight...180.......12.5 ........A.S. GSP Middleweight........195.......15 ........A.S Machida Shugun Rashad (easier for JBJ) L Heavyweight......215.......20 ........ jbj jds cormier? etc Heavyweight........265.......50 IS this in line with what others have thought?
Well, the heavyweight division is very large. Anything from 205 to 265! Thats a bit much in alot of peoples eyes. And the jump from WW to MW is a big one. Im not saying its 'broke' but i do think that this would be interesting, maybe even an improvement.
i just wanted to put it out there for discussion. it has merits and drawbacks and i would respectfully suggets that if you dont want to discuss them fuck off and comment on a different thread.
The HW division has a huge weight range, because at those higher weights the law of diminishing returns kicks in as there becomes not as great a competitive gap between different weights since the strength advantage is not as dramatic from say 240 to 265 (90% of higher weight) as say 145 to 155 (93% of higher weight), and is usually offset by a more dramatic speed and mobility loss in those higher weights. Besides, even with a 60 lb-division range, they still cannot fill it well to be as deep in talent as the other weight classes separated only by 10-15 lbs.
