Let's Be Realistic About Ronda's Armbar on Cat--It Wasn't All That Impressive

The take-down reversal Ronda did against Cat was beautiful, but the armbar was not some amazing, high-level submission that Ronda pulled off. Cat screwed up big time and gave Ronda her arm.

In BJJ/submission grappling, when you're in a negative position (in someone's guard, in someone's mount) you have to keep control of your elbows or you will get submitted. In this case, Ronda had Cat's back, and rather than Cat doing what she should have done--keeping control of her elbows so she doesn't get armbarred--she extends her whole arm out. All Ronda has to do is secure the arm and throw her leg over, which of course she did. Why someone would do that against an opponent known for armbars is beyond me, but she was probably caught up in the heat of the moment.

The bottom line is that anyone who thinks this was some incredible move Ronda pulled off is either just spewing hype (Joe Rogan) or doesn't understand grappling. Not to take away anything from the champ, but I don't like things getting way overblown like this. The reason Ronda had to "make this armbar up" on the fly was because people don't normally just give you an arm to lock out for them. Usually Ronda has to set up her armbars.

Impressive to me. Gracie guys explained it well. Including what Cat's mentality would have been at that moment.

I couldn't have done it

And that's me being realistic

Let's be realistic, your thread isn't all that impressive.

It was a scramble. It wasn't like she was in a negative position for any amount of time to even move her arm, it was what, 1 and a half seconds?

Also

Of the 1,230,443 things that could have happened in that scramble, Zingano managed to get finished.

Now THAT'S impressive

T rex arms would have saved her. And don't listen to the gracies, they're just watered down, money grubbing versions of their more impressive previous generation.

According to the Gracies it was actually BJJ training that led her to do that. That other alternative exposed her back and neck and MMA fighters are trained to never give the back. Basically, she was completely screwed either way and it was pick your poison.

Absolutes are one of the worst ways to qualify a post and/or an opinion. There are equally valid positions in disagreement.

You're doing exactly that.

She slapped on a slick sub, as a result of a forced defensive position for Cat. I thought Ronda was going to attack her back (via RNC or something), before she went after the arm (and I get why). It was good stuff, credit to Ronda for pulling it off. She's earned the right to impress.

i bet gsp was impressed by rondas performance

It wasnt that impressive but the UFC geeks who agree with Rogan that Ronda would beat up half of the BW division think it was.

Cool move but nothing special. I dont think Zinganyo could have made it any easier for Ronda.

She was attacking the left arm at first with her right arm by overhooking it. All Ronda had to do was turn her hips and bring the right leg around Cats right shoulder and head to the left, Cat was worried about that arm and trying to defend Ronda by stopping her from rotating by holding her neck with the right arm, Ronda transitioned seamlessly to the right arm. The step over position she had with Cat, almost flattening out, caused her to have armbar positions on both arms open.

Once Ronda got the step over, it was checkmate, her armbars are too clean for such a position where both arms are available. Anybody with any reasonable grappling experience knows this, Cat lost her chance to defend once she let Ronda step over.

let's be honest
normally in 14s you can defeat only total noobs via sub like that
ts is right
not that cat is not a good fighter, but she made the biggest mistake possible and it was an easy win for her opponent
