Crime Let them eat cake. Riot police fight off attempt to get to Macron

They need pension reform , have you looked at those numbers ?

That should be the conversation instead of this nonsense about globalization and let them eat cake.

We have a narrative on this side of the ocean talking about inequality and social programs that rightly points to Europe as counter example.

France is a good case where we should ask ourselves at what point does the left’s claim to have empirically better policy meet its own cultural limits? All these Euro countries are having there own debates on what the right balance is here. To be fair those countries’ debate resemble more of a democratic primary (minus the Warren / Bernie accusational BS) than the full debate here.

Don't these people have jobs? Who's paying them to protest?

As long as the water cannons aren't just being used against people of color it's fine. No cause for outrage.

"Hey, look over there!"

They've been protesting/rioting for like a year straight now.

No shit. I've been here in Germany about a year and everytime I go there is some yellow vest shit going down.

They voted for him! Hopefully they learn from this as they suffer more and more at there own hands.

The yellow vests, while smaller in number, still protest every weekend.

AND the unions have been on strike for what, over a month?

Macron is a globalist Rothschild agent. He is telling the French people that their pensions must be reformed to free up money to ship in more migrants and to pay for new Homes to gift the migrants.

the French need a revolution

Yeah, the whole democratic elections thing is awful. Better stop that

Macron escorted by police as protesters try to storm theater

Police in Paris were forced to call for backup on Friday as dozens of protesters outside a theater tried to storm the building and reach President Emmanuel Macron.

The Elysee presidential palace told CNN that protesters had tried to enter the building, while video on social media shows police tussling with protesters outside the Bouffes du Nord theater's building. Several demonstrators entered the building before being dragged back out by police.

Riot police holding up shields formed a line against the protesters, who shouted "Macron, out," in the latest of more than a month of protests against the embattled President's pension reform plans.

You know I sure would like my fellow countrymen more, if they were more French, and understood that they do have actual power.

Macron will back down from his pension reforms just like he did on his gas tax.

Why? Because the French people aren't going to go away.

This month long strike will continue until he backs down, and the more he refuses to listen to the people, the more things will escalate.

Your title for this thread is hilarious.

Well done sir.

What do you call cutting pensions other than austerity?

It is called ensuring your programs are sustainable. Without even taking a side on this particular issue, austerity is a group of policies that include cuts to govt and tax increases when it can’t pay its debt. It’s usually a crises reaction, often imposed by external creditors (or stupid republicans). Is every increase in taxes or cuts to programs, austerity? No. You saying austerity has never worked and then defining it so loosely is the same as saying no cut in govt programs or increase in taxes were ever beneficial. That’s demonstrably not true.

I just don't understand how cutting consumption in your economy can ever be a good thing.

It’s not. But having an economy that is cutting produce is even worse. You can’t consume unless you produce, so arguments about retirements invariably come down to who has to produce and who gets to consume. It’s a generational and distribution issue, as well as an investment issue, ultimately you need productivity growth or people need to work longer.

you don’t need productivity growth. Nor people to work longer.

what people need is for the extreme rich elites to pony up for the benefit of native french people.

they are all gonna have 5 million less every single year. That’s just a start.

they aren’t going to be able to import migrants to work for less that native french either.

French society will also be restructured so people learn to rely on each other for support. Community will become a major pillar again.

If the macrons and the EU elite try to save their wealth and power, maybe they need a reminder of how french deal with such people in the past

That doesn't track to me. Production is being constrained by consumption. You can't have productivity growth without consumption growth.
