Seems like earning a title shot in the UFC is a bit of a grey area, and I think they want to keep it that way. They make it hard for some fighters, and easy for others.
UFC will give title shots to fighters who haven’t fought in over a year at least, or don’t even have current top 10 wins.
UFC will not give title shots to fighters who don’t bring in viewers despite being very deserving such as on a huge win streak or beating top contenders constantly. Ex:

Let’s make a criteria for earning a title shot:

1. Need to have a top 5 win in the last 6 months (unless injured)

2. Need to have 3 or more wins in a row

3. Need to be actively fighting (2 fights per year at least)

4. Immediate Title Rematches are not awarded unless previous fight goes to SD or Draw or DQ

What else ya got?

Money is important like it or dislike it

Generally all good criteria IMO.
While there should always be exceptions; yours would be good rules.

There'd have to be a promotional shift to make your approach economically viable, though.

The obvious answer is we let the fans vote with their wallets like American Idol. A buck a vote to get your favorite fighter a title shot.

1. If the fans want to see you fight for a title.
2. If the champion calls you out.

Wasn't this exact thread or very similar thread made by Sherdog staff just yesterday?

It's not as simple as hard and fast rules, it really depends on the circumstances of the champion and the division.

For example, Volkanovski wanted to fight at UFC 273 having just beaten Ortega. Then Holloway dropped out and couldn't fight on that event. Korean Zombie was the next logical conclusion even though in an ideal scenario there would've been a more deserving contender, however he was the best choice at the time compared to other options.

1. Be ranked #2 (Champ ranked #1)
2. Losses drop you two rankings.
3. You hold ranking in a win.
4. Odds fight down 1, evens fight up 1.
5. Pulling out of a fight, unless postponed less than 60 days, has same effect on ranking as a loss. Injured fighters should lose rank.

Excellent idea, TS! Let me add to that:
  • Must be ranked #1
  • Must be on a 10+ fight win streak
  • Must fight at least 3 times a year for 3 consecutive years
  • Must defeat at least 7 of the top 10
  • Have no suspensions for the past 10 years
  • Any split decisions or draws resets the win streak (regardless of winning/losing)
Only then does a fighter deserve a championship bout. Benny boy ruined his chances but Belal is on his way to earning a shot at the belt!

1. Over 1 million instagram followers. Less = no title shot
2. In cage victory celebrations = accelerated path to title shot

If you're fight gives Dana White an insta boner. You get a shot, unless the next fight in the same weight class does that. Then you need a 15 fight win streak.
