What's the point of having an MMA Rankings if the Top Contender will not get a Title Shot in the 1st Place?

I have nothing against superfights or fun fights that makes the people happy and the managers and owners wealthy but, the legitimacy of contendership is fading now this is turning to a wwe or a beauty contest where the fighter that can gain media attention gets the 1st title shot.

I hope legit top contenders can bring attitude and media attention so that they can get a title shot.

Bisping vs. Hendo for MW Championship? Really?

Woodley vs. Gsp? Against a Champ inactive for years?

I smell a McGregor super fight again

I hope Thompson,Jacare or Weidman and Aldo's title shot don't turn into bogus dream.

I´m with you, man. Sweet times were those when fighters had to worry only about fighting... leave the fake shit for the kids.... now it´s all about tt and ppv.

The point of having rankings is to give fans a general idea of who the best fighters in the division are. That's all rankings are. They are only ancillary. I see fans treating them as the MMA equivalent to regular sports' league tables. But that's not what they are.

Regular contendership still exists most of the time. There can only be so many bigger-than-the-sport stars like Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey. In general, the better fighters will be getting title shots. Just accept that sometimes these superfights, or whatever you want to call them, have to happen. It comes with the nature of the sport, in that it doesn't have a regular sport schedule. Fighters can't fight every week like sports teams can play every week. Every fight is a one-off event.

The Hendo title shot comes under very weird circumstances. You won't see shots like this often. The champion is arguably not even considered among the top 5 of his division, and his upset is one of the biggest in UFC title fight history. Meanwhile, his biggest rival and one of the biggest legends in the sport, happens to be retiring around this time, while there's also not a regular clear cut contender (Rockhold and Weidman are coming off losses; Jacare is tainted by the Romero "loss"; Romero is tainted by his supplements).

GSP is arguably the most dominant champion in the history of the sport, and he never lost his title. If he wants a title shot, he should obviously get it. Again, situations like this won't present themselves often.

McGregor is one of the exceptions of the sport I alluded to earlier. But even his situation is helped by particular circumstances in that he's beaten the top 2 contenders of his division.

I was among the first to support the idea of McGregor fighting RDA. I tuned in to the press conference live, i never watch press conferences. It was a really cool idea to have two champions fight, about fooking time Dana let someone do it without ditching their belt.

Seeing the aftermath and results of that fight just getting scheduled, i regret my opinion

The casuals don't understand fuck nothing of rankings, matchmaking, contendership and competition. Those are only buzzwords they are used to from other sports and that give them the appearance of legitimacy.
At the end of the day, though, they tune in and pay to watch the circus, not the sport.

We need to really start using the phrase "money fight" instead of superfight. I know I sound like a jerk but I don't think the fights you mentioned were anywhere near being superfights.

Even rda vs McGregor was a champ with no title defenses versus a guy with like 2 defenses.

Superfights answer some big question for us like who is the goat or a champ from 2 promotions fighting. Those are just all poor matchups being picked.

There's a certain amount of legitimacy to a GSP/Woodley match-up being that GSP left with the belt. But for the most part I'm inclined to agree with the TS. People lack empathy, just imagine being the guy who worked his ass off to get to that #1 contender spot just to get snubbed by some hack whose trash talk is better than yours....

I would be okay with GSP jumping WB for the title shot because GSP was the undisputed king of WW who left with the belt. His return would earn him the right to fight for the title he never lost.

However, the Hendo title shot was bullshit, absolute bullshit. Bisping just didn't want to lose to a legitimate contender at the first hurdle. Jacare puts him out in round 1 with a finishing of his choice.

The champ doesnt always have to fight the #1 contender. It depends on a lot of things. When the champs last fight was. What contenders are available to fight. What matchups fans want to see. $ negotiations.
