Being relatively short (5'7) and being pretty young (16) I was wondering any weapons I could carry for self defense. I am traveling to Manhattan for Muay Thai taking the subway at night so I do not want to be an easy target. Although I currently box, and wrestled in the past, if a few guys come at me I could not defend myself so anything type of weapon would help. Thanks.

That's just ridiculous.

Unless you have a firearm, you won't be able to defend yourself from multiple assailants, anyway. And even then, I count on at least one of them being armed somehow.

Just try to be in a crowd, where your chances of being attacked is less.

You can carry a cell phone so you can call the police after you get robbed, stabbed, shot, or whatever else can happen. You don't have the right to defend yourself in the People's Republic of New York.

Fixed it for ya, man.

it might be touristy enough that your average thugs are on to it, but carry a decoy wallet. put an old ID from school, 10 or 12 bucks, some random stamp cards from coffee shops, etc. when thugs approach, give it up freely.

keep your real wallet or cash stash hidden in your gym bag or somewhere else on your person.

The crime rate in Manhattan is WAAAAY down on where it was 10 years ago. Many people have this mental image of Manhattan as being dangerous, but it's one of the safest places in the US, and probably THE safest dense urban area. Yes, there are some neighborhoods where crime is still an issue, but you can usually keep out of it if you have your wits about you.

You'll be in the greatest city in the world. Relax and enjoy yourself.

common sense, situational awareness, boxing skills, and running are the best bets. then again when i was 16 i think i carried a box cutter (being i stocked shelves part time) and DO NOT suggest that.

I'd be way more afraid of a thug with a box cutter than one with a fancier knife- a mugger with a box cutter clearly has nothing to lose, lol

Here's a way around weapons laws for just about anywhere you go...

Then again when I was about your age(17) I just carried a pistol for protection(Hi-Point .380 acp which btw was a total pos). Although I of course can't advise that for this situation because the slammer is a more dangerous place than the subway, generally speaking lol. Now that I'm older I can carry legally where I live since I have a permit so I don't have to worry about those issues.

Running shoes. Decoy wallet. Kubotan keychain. Bright-ass LED flashlight. Cellphone. Common sense.

They'd take the cell phone too.
