Having trained a bit of kickboxing, I notice that kickboxers often use simple leg sweeps to pull their opponent out of balance. I'm not talking about the grand leg sweeps seen in Wushu or Thai boxing. They're used more like part of a combination. A few straight punches, sweep your opponent's foot so he's off balance and then finish with a devastating hook or uppercut.

But I rarely ever see this used in MMA. Why not?

Because its MMA not kickboxing.

You haven't been watching Machida's moves that closely...

He uses sweeps a lot.

Because it's a karate thing, that's why you don't see it often outside of a Machida fight.

TS doesn't mean leg sweeps used as takedowns like in those Machida gifs. He means leg sweeps used to throw off their balance like what Machida did to Rashad a few times, and like what you frequently see in traditional WKF style point fighting.

Uhm, ok. Let me rephrase the question for you, to help you understand;
Why does it work in kickboxing, but not MMA?

You haven't been watching Machida's moves that closely...

Yes, I have. But let me illustrate why your answer isn't very smart; if I ask why shotokan karate isn't used much in MMA, and you say "Machida does it", you fail completely, because you've only managed to find a single fighter as an example. You see, if you'd been able to name 30 UFC fighters who use leg sweeps as part of combinations, you'd seem more educated. Instead, you chose to pretend you're the only one on Sherdog who's studied how Machida fights.

I assume you meant well.

Correct, sir. Well, since you understood what I meant but didn't have an answer, I'll just assume it's a difficult question. I wonder if it's just one of those techniques that, while effective, haven't made it into the MMA arsenal yet.

Because it's a karate thing, that's why you don't see it often outside of a Machida fight.
Except it's not strictly a karate thing though. I guess it came to kickboxing through karate, but since it's made it to kickboxing, you'd think it make it to MMA as well. MMA fighters tend to be familiar with kickboxing, after all.

Because striking in MMA is striped down and simplified. There are a lot of effective striking techniques that aren't used much in MMA.

Which ones did you have in mind?

Because it's mostly a points-tech, with some application as a setup-tech, and MMA favors damage-techs.

plus like that other cat said MMA striking is still basic, outside of the rare Machida or Anderson.

Cmon, just be honest and straight forward and say it like it is. It's cuz for the most part mma striking sucks and most mma guys have shitty striking for the most part.

Mmmkay.... As compared to what, 5 guys hitting 1 guy with bats? Because then you might have a point

Not sure why they are not used more. Easy to implement and after a couple it really gets into your opponents head.

Yeah, they're familiar with it but they don't fully grasp the art like Machida and Karate. Another reason maybe that rather than just throw their opponent of balance they'd rather just take them down.

yep. Landing on your ass as you go to execute a technique is a wake-up call.
