Leg locks are becoming one of the new meta in MMA like calf kicks. Every fighter is attacking their opponent's legs whenever they're off their back. Dariush almost submitted ferguson off his back with a heel hook . And vettori was able to stand back up by attacking izzy legs.

It's starting to catch on but they are at a high-risk, high reward area right now and the practice haven't been done on them to a point where you can pull them off without getting punched in the face, it's more the entry that is difficult.

Pre-Danaher they were a bit taboo in the pro-BJJ world and MMA is just now catching up to where pro-BJJ is currently at. I think Ryan Hall is the only specialist that comes to mind, Oliveira I believe had some mild success but more as to threaten for position.

Palhares was ahead of his time. If he didn't have the fight IQ of a squirrel crossing the street he could've make some serious waves in the MW division

Most MMA fighters use it when they're on the bottom position to either stand back up or just to complicated things for the top players. Other than hall, no one is looking to imanari roll their opponents because it rarely works.

Have to admit that I’m a little surprised that as effective as certain guys became with them in BJJ, against opponents who are elite grapplers and probably spent quite a lot of time studying and training to defend those positions, that no one has emerged in the UFC or another major promotion that I’ve seen who pulls them off or even really goes hard for them against opponents with mediocre grappling. Half the time you see someone till for one he appears to get it and then you realize that it just isn’t hurting the guy.

I think they'll have a better place in MMA primarily as a sweep or stand up attempt, but im also not a BJJ guy so feel free to correct me

I went for a leglock in a streetfight....I ended up with his shoe and multiple punches to the face.....it was a perfect heel hook until then lol

I agree, Oliveira uses them that way, most guys use them that way. It's extremely hard to submit high-level guys with anything these days

Even Garry Tonon hasn't been able to finish a few lower-level ONE guys in really deep leg entanglements because people are willing to let their legs break lol

Sucks subs become so rare, I'd love to see a crazy Americana sub soon

MMA is so multidimensional that it’s almost impossible to cover all the bases for every type of attack when they’re training.

As soon as fighters start to train for it, they move onto something else. This is why moves like the calf kick are making a temporary resurgence but will fade when fighters start to key on it.

Some guys get KTFO going for heel hooks, you have to know what you’re doing
