Sports and political activism mostly on cases dont ever mix well. The fact that its causing NBA ratings to drop i am not surprised.
Ever since the kneeling of some NBA players to the political/social activism started in 2020. The ratings for NBA have being slowly declining downwards.

Same thing happened with NFL with their ratings.
Lebron James Is Causing NBA ratings drop over political/social activism
The owner of this bar cites LeBron’s hasty, misinformed tweet about the Columbus shooting as his reason. According to him, James should stay out of politics and political issues like police brutality and gun control.

“They just need to play the game and that’s it,” he said. “Their opinion doesn’t really matter. They’re using their position to push their opinions, and that’s just not right.”

The ratings decline is a result of many things, the least of which have to do with Lebron. You people like to blame him for anything because you are jealous of his success and that he refuses to just "shut up and dribble."

and funny how you are all happy about politics in sports when it comes to one or 2 guys who stand for the anthem when the rest kneel. THEN politics are ok

I'm a huge Laker fan. My home office has signed Magic and Kareem jerseys in glass cases as my wall art.

The NBA has gone too far. From Showtime to Shaq + Kobe, I was Purple and Yellow 100%. Magic is my all time favorite athlete, because while being a star, he still made everyone better around him in extreme ways.

I quit the NBA when they had BLM court-side and SJW logos on the players' jersies. WTF? Now, I see they are doubling and tripling down on Leftist ideological leanings. That and their Chinese ties has me considering not watching even the Finals if the Lakers get in. I know dozens of family and friends just like me. This has to be costing the NBA a fortune. Maybe all those Yuan will make up the difference? But, the NBA has basically aligned with LeBron as they have taken zero acton against him.

I quit baseball too... and had season tickets to Angels' games.

The NFL seems to be backing away from the SJW shit, so I have been warming back up to Pro Football.

You'll either get people that discount cord cutting/ratings dropping across the board during pandemic time or get people that discount the political message turning off people. According to arguments on the interwebs, their effect on ratings discounts the other.

After the National Football League celebrated its history-making 11-year contract worth more than $100 billion, attention shifted to the NBA’s deal, which runs through the 2024-25 season. Early thinking within league circles suggests the NBA will seek a $75 billion rights package, up from its current $24 billion deal, which pays $2.6 billion per year.

The reason is because of streaming and the NBA being a very popular international sport, much more popular internationally than the NFL or MLB. So the conservatives who think they are actually hurting the NBA by hating Lebron James and not watching games are just wasting their time.

Because one New Delhi bar won't play NBA games? lol

I don't think standing up for black causes (whether he's right or wrong) is going to hurt BASKETBALL lol

Ratings have been declining long before Lebron became a social justice leader

Corporations used to know to stay away from politics because it's retarded to alienate half your customers, but now that they're more concerned about getting that sweet Chinese money, they bend over, lube up and take that CCP cawk by mouthing Chinese propaganda. Lefties in the US already have no self esteem and aren't smart enough to notice they've done a 180 in their absolute conformity to whatever corporations tell them to think and do.

Well if a guy that owns a bar says it then I am convinced. Excellent thread.
Well its not just the bar.

NBA TV ratings watch: Network games down, plus thoughts on the big sports slump
The usual media outlets will never publicly say or acknowledge well its because of social activism and messaging that is causing the big sports slump.
Eventually, it will be official: The NBA again lost viewership on its ABC games, down from last season’s all-time low of a 2.95 million average in 15 games. The current average for the 12 premium network TV games to this point in 2020-2021 is 2.83 million

That's quite a huge drop.

The ratings are tanking because people want to be entertained. I don't care what the league or players political and social beliefs are. I want to watch the best play the game of basketball or any other sport. Why am I going to pay to see peoples political beliefs all the time?

- I haven't watched a game in probably 15 years. But unless the guy start's talking about his political views, in the middle of a game interview. I don't see why his political inclinations should matter in watching him playing.

Ps: Shaquille O'Neal is far cooler. And they should stop basket forever when Shaq retired anyway.

Don't know about that. The game is just different from what people used to watch. It is becoming more and more about long-range shooting, and lack of physical contact, with any player interaction generally being penalized, and maybe that just doesn't appeal to people. It might appeal internationally but not inside America.

The physical, intense close quarters game, which saw a lot of trash-talking and occasionally pushing, shoving and even fighting, seemed to be more entertaining to the crowds.

LeBron is arguably one of the last draws in the game, but he's getting older and less of a "human highlight reel" than he was, even if he's still a very efficient player.

The political stuff might concern some people, but to be honest, that's everywhere nowadays. Anywhere you look, you'll have people giving their useless 2 cents on things.

There is a lot of truth to this.

For everyone in the US that stops watching the NBA, two more overseas will follow. We (Americans) only make up a portion of the NBA's future.

Last year, I read a great piece about how the NBA is the quintessential sport of the 21st century:

- it takes very little space to play a basketball game. Unlike soccer, football, and baseball. Therefore, basketball courts can be built in rural and urban communities.

- the world's population is become more urbanized. That means sports must become urbanized as well. A basketball court is more convenient to set up in a city of 23 million than a baseball field.

- televising/streaming an NBA game is easy because half of the entire playing space can fit in the shot.

- many of the US's larger sports leagues have tried and tried to get into the international market, but only the NBA has created a foothold

- basketball (like soccer) cost very little to play. No fancy equipment means that poor and rich communities can participate.

He’s an idiot, but so is most of the rest of the league. I caught snippets of games last year and they’d all changed their names on their jerseys in honor of heroes like Jacob Blake.
