I am looking for a vacation house by a lake. Doesn't have to be on the lake itself but that would be a plus. What I'm looking for is a house with nice scenery /rural but still within a 20 minute drive to a fun town (ideally something like 15 or 20 mins away from Portland OR or Seattle or Boise ). I'm open to other states but I want it to be a short plane ride from southern Cali. Budget around 500k, but the cheaper the better

What are some cities you guys can suggest in these areas to start looking for real estate?

I've always liked the coast on the Pacific Northwest.

New Hampshire has some lovely lake homes, but I haven't looked in your price range. One of the advantages to NH is its close proximity to Boston.

I would recommend McCall, Idaho. Right on a lake, tons of wilderness areas and rafting rivers nearby, and a nice ski mountain 6 miles from town. Boise dimes are a 2 hour drive.

    Spoiler for huge pic.
