Knowing when to let go

you shouldnt do heel hooks until you are a blue even then its sketchy...you were wrong...just switch to an ankle lock...its right there

I did not know that certain leg submissions were not allowed in BJJ, however since my school also trains in no-gi and mma I assumed that they were allowed.

When did you last see a BJJ match that ended in a heelhook?

you can say tapping is their responsibility.

but I saw a guy come into my school once, he rolled with one of our guys,
got him in a heel hook, and our boy wouldn't tap, so he let go, without
the slightest bit of hesitation or reluctant feeling, he didn't care about it at all.
So there was no pause no opening in his transition, he kept attacking & eventually
got an armbar. This guy won my admiration & I vowed to do the same since.

On the other hand this other guy comes into my school, rolls with the same guy
from my school, gets him in a heel hook, cranks it so hard and fast, he has no time
to tap, and was in big pain. we all thought, what an A-hole.

I saw a Rickson seminar video and he rolled with a big guy who was trying to beat him,
Rickson got an armbar, this guy tries to flip out of it, Rickson let's go of the arm, and
makes sure this dude doesn't land on his head and twist his neck.
I rewinded it over and over, and you can see Rickson's facial expression change,
and he reaches out and grabs the big guy with one arm and tries to guide him down
the proper way. then he went back to guard and subbed him with a triangle.

if you aspire to have kindness in your training you will become more fierce in real life.

Theres no way you should be applying heel hooks in your first class. The other guy should quit BJJ for getting caught in a heel hook to someone on their first day.

Very well said.

I guess some people don't leave their egos at the door. Why injuring a training partner if he is not tapping? Maybe he is just stupid and doesn't understang thats going to get hurt, maybe he thinks he can get out of it, maybe he just refuses to tap because of his ego.

What do you prove unting someone like that? Just how "small" you are.

Don't use heel hooks in sparring. If you have to, put the heel hook on, but don't twist the foot. Just show him and yourself that you can do the heel hook. Let go, go for an achilles hold instead. When having someone in a submission, it's better to let go and be sure he doesn't get injured, than to hold on twisting/arching fast, because he might not be able to tap or have time to react to the sub and he'll get injured. Better be safe than sorry.

good post. it's a good general rule to not force a tap on a heel hook. apply it, give the guy a chance to tap and if he's being an asshole let it go. nothing wrong with being the bigger man.
