Knee replacement

Can't wait until fake knees are so vastly superior to real knees that you feel like the bionic man after getting one.

I suspected it would be a waste, but so far its been quite positive. Beating expectations at least. Need a few more months to really tell.
If I remember right, he said it was great for like 6 to 12 months then he needed another shot.

that smell of burning bone is not good.

Did you have OA? Is that why you needed the knee replacement?
yes. When they went in 10 months ago they fixed a tear but found a lot of arthritis and I ended up using a cane for 7 months, stayed in terrible pain the whole time and finally just couldn't take it anymore. Dr said after that it needed to be done that it was all messed up inside.

Motherfucker!

I'm trying to Avoid knee replacements. Had a stem cell treatment a couple weeks ago. Was skeptical but was like WTF, why not.

I'm more surprised with the result than I thought I'd be. I may get 2 more treatments to see how close to normal I can get my bashed up knee.

Looked like a shot of old dishwater and olive oil.

$1800 a treatment since BlueCross Federal plan won't cover it.

How old are you Cogs?
I'm 47. I've had 7 meniscus repairs before the replacement. First 3 in my early twenties, then in my 30's and 40s but then the arthritis started kicking in. The replacement are painful but the first one, I have no complaints really other than it's sensitive to outside force like bumping into something. but I was bone on bone for almomst 10 yrs but the Drs kept saying "too young"...

Dayhum.

I'm 49 and too young too. I'm trying to buy another 10 years or so before I take that plunge. Shit as bad as major surgery is at 47-49 it's gotta be worse at 60-70-80!

Hope all goes well. Yo.

If the Dr was dealing with the pain, he wouldn't say he's too young. There is no sense to spend the prime of your life in pain. I wanted to have both done at once but they wouldn't do it here. A friend in Milwaukee had both done at once. It is common there. After my doctor did my first one he told me he couldn't have done both anyway because they only had one large enough to fit the bones.

Are you fucking for real? They wouldn't put you out for that?! .....Why?

Hugh Downs had a double knee replacement on camera in 1996 with just a lower body block.

They said they are changing from putting all the way out to the epidural shot and other new medicines.. They must be right, I've been home one day and havent had to take any pain medicine today, can move around with a walker pretty easy...First surgery was so painful I thought I was gonna die and it hurt bad for a good 7 months. So far this time I'm chilling pretty peacefully in decent comfort. That is till the physical therapists show up and start bending the shit out of it.

Exactly! I needed done 10 years ago but the answer was always your too young..I told him, so you want me to spend the youngest years of my life being miserable but then you're gonna fix it when I'm an old man who's not going interested in doing the things I'm missing out on now? Thats nice of you....

I can't imagine doing them both at the same time. Thats crazy, but it does save time out of your life not having to wait.

This thread hits home. I've had varying levels of knee pain ever since I broke my foot 10 years ago. I'm in my mid 30s. The pain is odd...I'll be pain free for a week, then moderate pain, for a few days, then pretty bad pain for several days. Then the cycle starts again. Working out and bicycling helps a lot up up until a certain point where it makes it worse.

Any idea what made the first one hurt so much?

Yes, they don't seem to understand that. They wanted my mother to wait too and she was in her late 60s. For me, it wasn't as much the pain as not being able to trust the knee. It would lock up or drop out. They found that I didn't have an anterior cruciate ligament when they did the second one.

Which parts of the knee did they replace? Do you have a artificial meniscus, acl, mcl, patella now? What exactly does a TKR entail?
Heres info on what they do.
  • The lower end of the femur. The metal femoral component curves around the end of the femur (thighbone). It is grooved so the kneecap can move up and down smoothly against the bone as the knee bends and straightens.
  • The top surface of the tibia. The tibial component is typically a flat metal platform with a cushion of strong, durable plastic, called polyethylene. For additional stability, the metal portion of the component has a stem that inserts into the center of the tibia bone.
  • The back surface of the patella. The patellar component is a dome-shaped piece of polyethylene that duplicates the shape of the patella (kneecap). In some cases, the patella does not need to be resurfaced. I was able both times to keep the patella, just needed resurfacing. Still have the acl, mcl though.

My Dr said that every knee is different. Also I had been walking with it bone on bone for almost 10 years so it was waaaay more inflamed and tore up so maybe a comination of a few factors? This surgery they used different techniques and new medicines discovered since the first one was done.. Two days home bro and I can already walk on it with no cane or walker, its fucking crazy how much different this one is. I'm at where I was at about 4 months into the first one.
