Josh Thompson trained with both and said Islam is a better grappler with better submissions and top control.
 
Yeah Islam is better than khabib if you compare their skills side by side but no way khabib would have struggled with volk

He set the record for most takedowns during that fight iirc. Just goat shit.
 
Khabib is a better ground fighter, but Khabibs game is very cardio based. He dominated guys, but he couldnt necessarily finish them. Took a while to take McGregor out of there too.

His title defenses had more to do with Gaethje and Diamond not being very good on the ground. Islam has a skill set that is better for finishing.

LOL Islam just fought Dustin and couldn't do shit with the grappling. Khabib subbed him in two rounds.

Khabib is a submission master but his role model at AKA was Cain Velasquez. Javier would literally yell "Cain Velasquez" and Khabib would start terrorizing guys with his gnp. His favourite thing to do was break guys will by continually battering them.

Um...yes..? I saw their fights too as did literally everyone on sherdog. Is that really your rebuttal, that Khabib submitted Diamond quicker? And it wasn't within two rounds. At least be accurate if you're going to be arrogant.

Islam had problems getting Diamond down and keeping him there.

The second paragraph is completely irrelevant.

Because his takedowns, top control and his grappling aren't as good and he's not nearly as dominant as Khabib in general.
 
Oh ok, I said Islam has a better skill set for finishing, which is literally backed by him finishing more people in a shorter amount of fights - but it's irrelevant because Khabib likes to GnP. That makes a lot of sense.

I dont think Islam is a better ground fighter than Khabib, but he is better at finishing. Those two are not binary statements. I literally said in my initial post that Khabib is good at grinding guys down.

Khabib could do what Islam does, but Islam can't do what Khabib does. If Khabib was focussed on submissions instead of grinding guys to pulp then he would have done it. Islam does not have the ability to fight like that so he became more reliant on submissions... but when he couldn't get them, like against Poirier, Volk, Arman, Mansour Barnoui ect. he struggled greatly. Khabib's style is much more dominant and he never surrenders position.
