Kellerman calls Mike Tyson “best P4P fighter of the 1980s”

Fighter of the decade is Leonard or Hagler IMO. I’d give it to Ray. Tyson achieved a lot, but still less.

Kinda like the 20s. Dempsey was the superstar but Leonard was the finest boxer.

Benny Leonard? He really didn't have a lot of fights in the 20s.
Did you mean Harry Greb?

Good enough for The Ring. Greb is certainly a decent pick.

He was but that peak P4P #1 rating only lasted a couple years during the 80's (1988-1989) and into 1990 until he lost to Douglas early that year. That only represents one-fifth of the decade. According to the same publication's ratings Hagler reigned as P4P #1 as well, no surprise, except he remained there for 4 consecutive years from 1983-1986. He was the P4P king for twice as long during the 80's era.

Max didn't say he was p4p for the entire decade, he just said that at his peak in the 1980s he was p4p. That's true.

That changes thing then. It seems the quote in the thread title needs changed or context needs to be provided. Those are two completely different things.

Well, given that Mike was shorter or only an inch or two taller, if that, than most of the greats from 147-175 during the 80s it's a legit possibility. For a man of his dimensions to do what he did in the HW division is ridiculous. He's a naturally smaller man than Andy Ruiz, just to put it into perspective. IMO only Duran even has an argument against Iron Mike.
