keeping muscle mass with a broken hand

I broke 2 bones in my hand in my last fight. I have broken a different bone in my hand once before and I ended up with one skinny arm and one normal arm after it healed. It took about a year to get everything even again. Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation? Or any advice on not losing as much muscle mass this time around? Its hard since no resistance training can be done with it.

Squat. Also, I would guess the fracture is high on your hand near your pinkie knuckle or something so you should still be able to put weight on your wrists and thus able to perform bench without enormous discomfort. Go light for reps if nothing else.

Err, if he has boxer's fracture, chances are, the first thing they'll do is immobilise the wrist, unless medicine has changed significantly in the last few years. A friend recently broke his finger and they immobilised the wrist just in case.

Squats are good advice, IMHO, but please use a spotter if you're squatting with a cast.

This may also be a good time to consider using machines.

2002 i broke bones in my hands 4 times and spent half the year with a cast on one of my hands.

Muscle balance and strength came back in a couple months.

Lifting sucked as I'd involuntarily flex some muscle in my hand around the broken bone which made it take longer to heal.

I got a boxers fracture late October...All they gave me was some bullshit ass splint that could velcro on/off and some vicodin I ended up selling...My hand every month has gained strength but still is only around 70% back to normal. Alot of shit bothers it(opening door nobs) while other shit(Deadlifting) doesnt. My doctor reccomended for me to make my own stress balls with a baloon, flower, water. He said make 3 different ones, all become more thick(less or more water, i forget). For the first 2 weeks, squeeze the easy one. Second 2 weeks, medium and third the hard one. I havent gotten around to it yet. Only bothers me when I get tired and have bad form throwing a punch...

EDIT: My doc also reccomended I should of gotten a cast but was too late when I went to go see him... Said the hospital musta been idiots.

Do a shitload of the gay machine exercises you've always wanted to try, but knew would make you feel dirty later so you didn't.

Also, squat your fucking ass off. I've seen guys with missing limbs squat, so be a roughneck and get some shit done.

I had the same thing, Lifting was fine for me too but turning my truck on in the morning hurt like hell

haha yes. The fucking turning the key in the car was by far the hardest thing to do for awhile.

I can't make the number three with my left hand anymore. And doubt I ever will.

Thanks for all of the advice. My wrist is immobilized, so benching is probably not going to happen for me. I was thinking also some isometric exercises with arm, i.e. flexing and going thru the range of motion while keeping static tension in those muscles. As soon as I get the cast off, I'll try lifting light. The main problem is that I fight at around 255, but naturally, I'd weigh around 190 without lifting. So i lose mass fast without lifting.
