Really enjoyed my first lesson, we do a bit of everything from standup to takedowns, to throws, to ground work (obviously)...

Question is however - my brother has a bad knee - he dislocated it years ago and had to stop playing soccer because of it He was worried about it before hand and on one of the throws he twisted it or something.

He wanted me to ask, is it feasible for him to pratise jujitsu with a bad knee? The told him to wear a knee=strap for now one so obviously he'll do that - is this sufficient or will it always preclude him from any intensive combat?

thanks guys,

Colin

Combat sports are hard on the whole body and bjj is well known to ruin knees. He can participate in a carefull manner and see how he goes but it will hold him back.

Its not going to be as easy and he is going to have to adapt his game.. but injuries plague every combat sport.. and there is till ways to excel and do well..

Look @ Gordo for example who had one of the most notorious half guards in bjj. He had an equally notorious bad knee which he used on the bottom side of his half guard.. and was still capable of fighting with the best guys in the world. Or coach tells us a story of how bad his knee was.. when they would try to go out to clubs Gordos knee would often pop out just from walking and or trying to dance.

I have a knee injury my self and i can still trian, but i cant do take downs.. i would just sit and pull guard.. i cant still fight from there and can still submit people fine.. but my game has had to be modified to deal with my injuries.

Tell your brother to do what he can, and if he feels he cant do something dont be afraid to say... i cant do that because of my knee. Not only will it help him by not destorying his knee.. but he will also have to deal with being humble... which honestly i think will be for the better since he is just starting... Learning to humble is harder to teach than anything else.. having an injury helps you understand what being humble is all about.

where there is a will there is a way.

I ruined my right knee from soccer, but manage to practice BJJ for a year without serious injuries. That is until 2 weeks ago, after a hard wrestling practice, my knee had some kind of "h
