Before I started training yesterday I would always spar with a kid 3-4 inches taller then me, hes lefty and a very exp. street fighter.. we were friends and liked doing it. My problem is he would constantly use his reach and jab me up and then just come in with a 1-2.. Is learning how to fight with guys who have a longer reach considered advanced? It really bothers me and I wanna conquer it.

Use head movement, footwork and ring craft to get into range. There's tons of threads on this.

Im taking these classes for self def - theres no ring on the streets or in his backyard - i want to be confident that i can take all sizes on no matter where I am.

Well then if it's not ring fighting finding your range won't matter much. I've never seen two people fighting where they find their range then keep it. Anyway best form of self defence is to run away.

d00d...read/watch the stickies. There are tons of great material in there worthy of trying out in the gym. Until recently, I spar with people of all sizes. One guy 6'7" just tears me to pieces with his jab and front push kicks. I'm 6'3". You just have to build up some footwork, speed, accuracy, and general skills. Diagonal and lateral movement might help. But check the stickies.
If you are training for self defense, jabs turn into eye gouges, leg kicks turn into groin kicks. You arent going to be using ring/cage tactics. You are gonna use street tactics and then run away.

Also when you are sparring a southpaw, try and keep your lead foot (left) on the outside of his. This makes it much eaiser to counter with a straight right.

What kind of self defense classes?

Also, there are other options besides fighting when you're out on the streets.
