In rocky 1 joe frazier comes out and Apollo tells him that he's next after joe accuses him of ducking him.

Apollo loses, setting up his loss of the title in rocky 2 and rockys ascension as champion into the early 80's by which Joe Frazier was likely retired.

It can only be assumed that either Creed won the belt off someone else who beat frazier, perhaps George foreman although we don't know for sure. There is no explanation to how the belt got from Frazier to creed we only know that they never fought.

We can assume that Frazier did at one point win the belt because the announcer calls him a "champion in and out of the ring". However this could be hyperbole by the announcer.

By the time rocky 3 comes along it can only be assumed that either 1. Frazier was beaten by clubber lang 2. Was one of the "bums" rocky defended against between rocky 2 and III or
3. Fell into obscuriity and or retired without ever getting his shot at the title.

Kind of a dark loose end that never gets tied up in the series.

Crazy to think it will be a decade next November since his death..feels like yesterday

Who’s to say Joe didn’t drop the title due to inactivity from a lingering injury, was set to make his comeback but then exacerbated the injury in training and never was able to return to the ring.

Possible I was going to say in the op that he had to vacate

I assumed he retired and Apollo beat Jerry Quarry for the vacated title.

Rocky was still fighting in obscure pool halls against opponents with 15-12 records when Joe was the champ.

Damn. I was thinking 2015.

I'm glad he finally got a statue. I remember when there were petitions on online boxing forums pushing for it that got shit tons of support. Fun fact I never met joe frazier but I did run into Marvis Frazier at an amateur event once that I went to. I was very young but I remember he was gigantic in person and that he seemed very kind and cool as he was talking to people at the event. I remember thinking how cool it was that I got a glimpse of joe frazier's son because I'm a joe frazier fanboy.

I was lucky enough to meet Joe Frazier in 2010 in Brisbane. Terrific guy, shame he ducked Creed.

Maybe rocky ducked frazier to fight clubber lang and fight an exhibition vs Drago, but the pro rocky media hyped them up and devalued frazier's status as s contender to enhance balboas legacy.

You think everybody he fights is a bum.

I came to say this. When I was a kid, my dad told me Clubber was supposed to be Joe Frazier.

Makes so much sense now, and further expands on apollos motivation for helping rocky win.
