Junior dos Santos disagrees with coaches who advise rest, targets May return

“I was prepared to defend the takedown attempts, and that’s all I did in the fight. That’s what I felt. I entered the fight to defend the takedowns and forgot to attack. I ended up giving him too much space to attack and paid a big price.

This has been the problem in almost all his losses. It's surprising to hear him admitting it now but I don't expect to see any changes in his fights.

What happened to the guy who fought Rothwell? He should be fighting like that in every single one of his fights, regardless of opponent. Stop fearing the takedown, stop spamming uppercuts. Just go out there and attack with a diverse set of strikes. And keep his back off the cage ffs.

That's the thing about being shot. You feel great until there's someone trying to hurt you.

400k just to show in his last fight

I agree with him

Get that money, cuzzy

I doubt that fight night card even had 400k views, ridiculous that JDS getting paid 400k, srsly wtf? Gaethje paid less than 100k for reference

Exactly

He's overpaid and his next opponent will most likely be outside the top 5

Keep getting that money

So, what would he have done differently? Press ? Then get taken down.

Ideal world I would have him over in Bellator and take on Bader at HW

He’s just a shell of his former self. Sadly that’s still good enough to be top 5-7. How about an overeem rematch?
This is what I thought of when I saw this thread. Overeem says he wants to come back April/May. So does JDS now. Kind of makes sense though it really would be a pointless "legend fight"

And we look forward to seeing you get KOed again in May.

Wasn't a savage tko, I agree with JDS he's just not a top guy anymore hopefully he gets a soft opponent in may. His boxing fundamentals he can easily style on untrained HWs (I was gonna say Abdurakhimov or Sakai but noticed they both just got fights) maybe Greene but he's unranked. Or actually a more shot veteran makes more sense JDS has never fought Arlovski or boa constrictor.

This is why the UFC needs a clear protocol on concussions. The NHL has one, why not the UFC? Fighters should have scans to confirm their recovery before returning to action.

Bet the house on his next opponent if it is somebody of good repute.

What about that head he had growing out of his right shoulder after the fight? They even tried to cover it with his shirt. He should probably at least rest until that disappears.

Dudes got kids to think about. He’s being very irresponsible. I’d hate to see him godown that path...

lol, i know this is your opinion and we all have ours, but, how about you let THAT man decide what is best for him and his life. lol @ saying he's being irresponsible to his kids. What the fuck?

Back home after a disappointing defeat that dropped his record to 6-5 since losing the UFC heavyweight championship in 2012, “Cigano” spoke with MMA Fighting about exactly what went wrong in the fight.

“I was physically well, feeling strong despite the difficulties we had, but man, I couldn’t find my timing,” dos Santos said. “I was prepared to defend the takedown attempts, and that’s all I did in the fight. That’s what I felt. I entered the fight to defend the takedowns and forgot to attack. I ended up giving him too much space to attack and paid a big price. I defended all of his takedowns but gave nothing in response, so that made him comfortable to got out and fight, and one hand landed.

“It’s not about being disrespectful, but you don’t have to consider your opponent’s strengths too much, you have to impose yours. That’s what I always say, but that’s exactly what I didn’t do this time. The strikes I threw didn’t land because I was too distant from him to avoid his takedowns. I wasn’t landing anything and giving him freedom to move and keep attacking. That’s what broke me. It’s his merit, he did his best and got the knockout.”

Dos Santos’ coaches at American Top Team advised the heavyweight veteran to take some time off after the defeat, his second knockout in a row, but “Cigano”, who turned 36 on Friday, is not a fan of taking time off on the sidelines.

“They wanted me to take a break and rest, but the problem is, I won’t rest,” said dos Santos, who signed a new eight-fight deal with the company prior to UFC Raleigh. “I will only rest when I get things right again and fix my mistakes. To me, the best option is to get another fight right away. I wanted to fight soon after my injury because that’s the best medicine to me. My life is good when I’m active, when I have a goal.”

The UFC has a Fight Night card booked for Brazil on March 14, and will return on May 9 for a pay-per-view event in Sao Paulo. “Cigano” won’t commit to any specific date or opponent right now, but sees “a lot of options” for a potential bout at UFC 250.

“I haven’t fought in Brazil since I entered the UFC, so that would be great for my career, to fight for my people,” said dos Santos, who was only scheduled to fight in Brazil once, but was forced out of a fight with Stipe Miocic with a broken hand in 2014. “I can get ready for a fight in May, no problem. That sounds good to me. In case they offer me something for that card, I can fight in Brazil in May.”

Listen to your coaches man....

does he need the money? If not, he should call it a career. His big pay days are over. He is not a contender. Maybe bellator is an option . They like former stars and probably will pay more than the 150k he will get in ufc.
We’ve seen this before. BJ still thinks he has some fight. Frankie is still going. Junior has made 90 percent of the money he will ever make in mma. Let’s hope Dana does him a favor and passes or gives him a pillow fisted wrestler.

Have you seen what happened to Ali? His kids were changing his diaper by the time h was 50

that's HIS choice to make. If he wants to fight and he thinks he can and the UFC gives him a fight, then he should fight.

he gets 400k a fight. and has 7 more fights on a new deal he signed with the UFC. That's 2.8 million in base pay + reebok money which will bring him close to 3 million.
