Now I'm not knocking Chan Sung Jung or Dustin Poirier so let's get that out of the way. I enjoyed the beat down greatly. I'm knocking the proposition that a one sided performance should be named "Fight of The Year". Why is Jung VS Poirier thought of as Fight of The Year? I watched it countless times and I gave every round to Jung as he controlled the pace of the fight. Hurt Poirier on numerous of occassions, and put him in multiple bad positions. The only thing shocking was how easily Jung dominated Poirier. Beyond surviving what offense did Poirier put up to garner Fight of The Year? Much better candidates are fights like Tate VS Rousey, Lauzon VS Varner, and Johnson VS Castillo. Back and forth fights with closely matched skill levels. I simply don't see how Jung VS Poirier garners "Fight of The Year" when it should be a runner for "Performance of The Year". Thoughts and criticisms?
Well I had it 2 rounds to 1 after 3. Jung was winning, but it wasn't like he was dominating. Poirier remained competitive throughout the fight. The fight was competitive itself, I don't get the notion where you saw it as a beatdown. Not that I'm accusing you, but perhaps you're watching the fight as a KZ fan moreso than say, a judge?
yea i thought it was one sided for jung. jung tired out in like the 3rd rd and when that happened i thought poirier was going to put it on him but jung still put it to him and finished him.
It wasn't a beatdown. It was an exciting fight with KZ winning but Poirier keeping competitive, even winning round 3.
agreed, I can't believe TS put Rousey/Tate claiming that fight to be more competitive when it was a first round sub!
Neither fighter is in my "Top 10" but I appreciate a solid performance from a couple of professionals. Plus the amount of hype Poirier was getting after beating the the "up and comers" he had was getting out of control. So it was nice to see the "Underdog" Jung get the win I admit.
The way Poirier got out of the armbar in Round 3 was fucking insane. And Zombie's reversal from the takedown to mount was ridiculous.
It was far from a beat down, and was much better than Johnson vs. Castillo. Lauzon vs. Varner was foty
But wasn't Rousey-Tate mostly consisting of Rousey going for the armbar and Tate defending until the last minute. Exciting? Sure. ROTY? Possibly. But I could definitely name 10 better fights this year. (Don't ask me, I'm at work lol)
Not every fight can be as close as Shogun vs. Henderson. For me KZ vs. Poirier was by far the best of the year, I don't care that Poirier never hurt KZ or anything.
I think you're trolling if you feel one sided thrashings shouldn't be considered FotY and then you suggest Tate vs Rousey. Yuz a troll... Yuz a troll.....
Cmon, rounds 1 and 2 saw scraps on the feet and amazing scrambles on the ground, alongside some nifty sub defense from Poirier and slick transitions from KZ. Round 3 saw Poirier drilling KZ with punches and it seemed like Poirier might've been on his way to KOing KZ, with KZ evidently slowing down. Then KZ opens the 4th round big and gets a beatiful finish on Poirier, who looked like he was about to take control of the fight the round before. I mean, Dustin actually showed submission defense, unlike Tate who just sat in the armbar till her arm was broken. As well as both of them showing actual technical striking as well.
