Could someone tell me the benefits and best techniques for jumping rope?
I assume it is to aid timing and increase cardio, is this correct?

Here is the best technique:

1. hold ends of rope in hands
2. spin rope over your head
3. jump over rope
4. repeat steps 2 & 3, increase speed as necessary :)

Skipping helps with timing, cardio, footwork and co-ordination. To mix things up you can skip on one leg, with high knees, do jumping jacks (feet in and out or forwards and backwards), do double-unders (spin the rope 2 times around while jumping once), triple, quad...etc unders. Search online, you can find plenty of videos of people skipping.

Jumping rope is probably one of the best workouts for a fighter, plus you can look cool infront of the ladies at the gym

I like the Mayweather routine... I'm hoping to be this good sometime in the future. :D

Nice skipping there. What rope do you use?

My Wal-mart speed rope kept breaking so I ordered the Ultra Speed Cable rope that Ross recommends. I can't wait for it to get here so I can try it out. It's supposed to be wicked fast.

Thick speed ropes..nothing fancy..

ball bearings, good weight, good speed, durable.

jumping rope for 10 minutes can burn as many calories as jogging at an 8 min per mile race

Jumping rope builds bone density and improves total body power

Per min, the calorie burn is good. But I wouldn't go for a 45 min 'skip'.

Skipping kicks ass, too bad I suck at it!
Watching that Mayweather video just made me feel worse!

I love skipping such great pre work out and it helps at alot of things what has been mentioned before hand.

I like Ross's videos better.

I love rope jumping, and I try to get in at least 3-5 5 minute rounds 3-4 times per week.

It's not a substitute for running, though, IMO.

I love jumping rope but have a hard time finding one for someone of my height. Any one 6' 4" or above know where to get a rope long enough for the tall folks?

I'm 6'3", just adjust your "circle" or how far out your arms are...I just use a basic rope from any sports store, thats "large"

I don't believe skipping can substitute for running, but that doesn't mean it isn't effective for conditioning in other ways. Mixing it in with GPP or as a "rest" between circuits of anything makes it a useful exercise.

Can be great with high speed tabata intervals as well.
