I just started wrestling at my university's wrestling club (we don't have a team, the school doesn't fund us) and it's been awesome!

Thankfully I haven't been doing that bad, the guys just tell me I need to be more explosive and agressive, but that i'm picking it up really fast. I was kind of hesitant at first as to how rough I should go (don't know the rules or the people) but guys just go at it at top speed.

Anyways, some differences I've noticed...

-Jeez, these guys love staying low to the ground and going for legs. i asked them once if I could go for hip throws or sweeps and they looked at me like I was stupid and asked "wait..you don't wanna shoot in?" I've pretty much decided to work on leg takedowns there and leave the Judo stuff in judo (but use it in there if I can).

-Ground game is quite a bit different. The first few times I got taken down I went into guard and would try to go for an armbar, lol. Also, when i manage to take a guy down and take his back I'd instinctively go for a RNC. I'm still getting used to doing the cranks instead. Also, not being able to clasp your hands while in top control annoys the hell out of me.

-The explosiveness required is crazy. granted, you'll get worked in judo too, but I never feel like I'm forced to go lightspeed. i can pick my attacks alot more.

Finally, I like both arts and I actually think they compliment each other. The guys tell me I have an excellent sense of balance and intution (feeling when a guys gonna go for something). I'm just getting caught with moves I'm ignorant of, like half-nelsons etc.

I think there's alot of stuff Judokas can pick up from wrestlesr and vice versa. We should all just get along and team up against the BJJ guys :D!

war against the bjj guys!!!!!! lol just kidding

hell we should all team up against the muay thai kickboxing guys WAR Takedowns/ground game!

Focus on shoots for now, but dont abandon your hip throws and sweeps. Alot of wrestlers at that level have no defense for the Whizzer (hip toss). Soon you shoudl do quite well. There;s a kid on the US Olympic Judo team, wjho'm i'd love to see do MMA. Aside from being an Olympic caliber Judoka, he was also a wrestler for Nebraska

Great advice, once you learn to stuff their shots you can "jack them up" into a position that you are comfortable in.
