Just got an email from my dojo Tohkon judo academy:

"USA Judo promotion board promotedProfessor Keiko Fukuda
to 10th Dan!!! This makes world Judo history because she is first women
to be awarded this honor.

She is last surviving student of Dr. Kano, the founder of Judo.
Her grandfather was Dr. Kano's first sensei. They would both be very happy for her hard workand accomplishments in Judo.

I just wanted to share this good news with the world. When I called to inform her of her promotion, she could not believe it because this was her dream. She is a living example that as long as you believe you can achieve anything."

Congrats Fukuda sensei.

Just watched that video about her the other day on here. So inspiring (even though I don't practice Judo)! Congrats to her on a well deserved rank!

Wow, they must have read theother thread about her. Good for her. She is def the last of the old breed.

Now if only the Kodokan would do the same and promote Fukuda Sensei to 10th dan.
She deserves it.

my knowledge of judo promotions is nil.

can you be ranked with USA judo and not with the Kodokan and vice versa? The two organizations are separate or is USA judo a branch of the Kodokan?

Each country has their own governing body. In the USA, I believe there are at least 3 governing bodies for Judo and belt promotions.

What it boils down to is money and politics. I have a promotion currently on hold because the governing body I'm affiliated with is strong arming my Sensei for more money, thus "invalidating" his promoting powers even though he signed off on my papers and I paid the fees (which they conveniently cashed, only to inform me later that my promotion was on hold til further notice).

That said, the most prestigious promotion someone can get in Judo is one from the Kodokan. It would be akin to getting a promotion in BJJ directly from Helio Gracie or one of his sons. They simply have more clout than other promotions do.

Yes.

Even worse - you can start your OWN judo organisation and promote YOURSELF to 12th dan or whatever. I know someone who has done that. He's 4th dan according to a legit organisation but split and started his own. Promoted himself to 12th dan. Plus his own organsation claims multiple world judo champions training ...

Wow.

I didn't know Judo was that fractured. I know Karate is like that. People will splinter off, add or modify a kata, and then say it's their own style. So you have tons of 8-10th degree BBs running around.

It's not THAT fractured. Just a little bit in some countries. But it does happen.

Specially in countries where its lucrative.

Kodokan doesnt even rules judo in Japan.

My coach went to a clinic with Fukuda sensei back in the 90s, with a mat full of BB they started there warmup. After 5 minutes she called matte and said " does no one here know tia-sabaki", and spent the next 2 hours on basic footwork and movement. Your never to old or ranked high enuough to skip the most basic fundementals of Judo.
