i have a torn pcl and doing thedrop sei nagi hurts my knee. What are some takedowns that won't be so hard on your knee? Jacare uses a takedown that looks like it will work well in bjj...

btw guys i am confused. What is the move that looks like a Seoi-nage but you don't "uppercut " your opponent's armpit and you hold on to his collar?

Is it the pressure of crouching when the opponent is loaded or are you planting the knee when dropping?

If you really like the throw it can be done with 1 knee down only or learn to spring up before the knees make contact . A proper drop seoinage shouldn't have contact with the knee on ground.

Morote seoinage tends to be done as a drop as well (at least in high level competition), so it might not be your best bet. The highest percentage throws (in the olympics) are seionage (which you've already said hurts your knee), uchimata (takes a bit of time to develop the timing), and osotogari (but not the textbook throw ... the competition version is somewhat different ... there's an interesting article about this in www.judoinfo.com in the articles section). Other than that, as pointed out sasae tsurikomi ashi (when done as a combo with osotogari) can be very effective.

As well, ippon seoi nage can be done standing (takes more timing but works) ... especially by doing it to the reverse side (ie to the side with the lapel grip ... find a demo online, it's easier to show than describe) as it works well as a combo with throws to the other side.

If you've got a good guard pass and top game, ouchigari is a great throw too (one of the ones Fedor uses all the time), though it'll land you in your oppenent's guard every time, so you'd have to be comfortable there.

I also have a problemwith my knee so I don't really like any hip htrows that rewuire bending, my go to move right now is Taiotoshi or one that I don't know the name if basically it is a Osotogari but you have a hold of your opponents other leg,

the thing that pisses me off is that judo guys tell me that i am nimble on my feet for a guy who never did judo but i have two problems 1) tend to keep my center of gravity backward and 2) tend to "jump" into my throws.

They are correct. If you "jump" you have no balance and can be tripped or thrown very easily. If you lean back, you're already off balance.

Get a knee brace for your knee, but knee injuries suck for judo.

Yep man you need to stay low, keep your weight on the balls of your feet. Look at the old school footage of Mifune. He doesn't jump into anything, he glids smoothly into throws. It's just like BJ, move smoothlyy, controlled and relaxed, dont spaz. You might need rehab on your knee

same here, so i do standing wall drills till i get so sick of them i wanna quit, then i do more.... this is what helped me

if you want to keep doing judo when you're older, give up the drop knee seionage. it's a sure fire way to destroy your knees the more you drill it.

btw, if you have a long body frame like me, seiotoshi is the way to go. sometimes traditional morote seionage is too hard and impractical for really tall people.

I kinda jumped into my drop seoi. Maybe they mean 'cocking before jump' like in boxing where you are telegraphing?.

they say i do a tumble and it seems that it's illegal. Oh i practiced with a rubber band and i can understand why judokas use them. If your balance is not right you fall right on your ass hahahahah.

i hate drop seoi nage with a vengence, i refuse to practice it for the sole reason that it'll fuck up your knees.

practice standing seoi nage

Stay standing man, theres a whole world of ashiwazas you can do which can act as a set up or an osoto or an uchi-mata but you can also ippon people with them straight up. The drop thing suits certain body types but the injury factor is enormous.

Try perfect hiza guruma/sasae and then follow them with an osotogari/uchimata/harai goshi and see how you get on.

you could also try the seoi nages in the traditional standing manner, Koga is one of the greatest judokas ever and he did all of them from standing, it helps if you're a shortie like him though:D
