Have been watching the original UFC events, and aside from the fence grabbing, shorts grabbing and headbutts one thing stood out the most. They introduce the judges (when they started having time limits), and the judges are all seasoned martial artists, wrestlers and trainers. WTF happened? if there's one thing that i'd love to see brought back to old school in UFC, it's this. Also, Tank Abbott is a glorious asshole. Hilarious.

Once they started operating under the jurisdiction of the state Athletic boards, you get state athletic board judges.

judges should all have to be olympic wrestlers, bjj black belts and have knocked somoene out and gotren knocked out. while giving and recieving over 1000 strikes in their life.
and they should get paid lots to be good judges.

Judgez for Moraes / Chagas draw

Solution: Every fight judged as a "draw" should be later decided by an official "video judging" to decide a winner.

figured something like that. How sad that the official AB judges are not even remotely as qualified as the amateur ones. sigh.

I think the owners at the time just found a few of their buddies to judge fights, if I remember right, most were karate fighters with 200-0 records.

WTF?

A working knowledge of martial arts is an absolute must.

Judges and refs need to know what is happening and that doesn't come from watching UFC. They should have some practical knowledge.

Same as a ref needs to know wrestling and BJJ to realise when somebody is working and when they're stalling.

A boxing dude might have no idea that a dude is getting close to a submission before he stands them up as a ref.

And if Maia is neutralizing a wrestler in guard a judge show know that being on his back isn't losing the fight.

Lets not forget about Judo Gene Labell who made many appearancez as a judge~

i dont know about every fight being a draw. Rogan has talked about this, but the judges should really just be in a room in the stadium with monitors so they have the best angle on the action. There's really no reason or benefit to them sitting cage side.

There should only be one judge for every fight, and that judge should be steven seagal. he will sit in a jeweled throne in the center of the octagon, high above the fighters, yelling out quotes from his movies:
"anybody seen Richie????!?!??!??!"
"you never understood about the neighborhood"
"Oh Vernon!!!!"

I would love to see retired fighters as judges.

And up it from 3 to 5 judges, even if only for title fights.

Love the early UFCs. Tank was really something to behold.
I wonder what happened to the UFC 1. He was awful

its really not very complicated. fuck boxing. forget about boxing credentials

judges and refs need to be certified. a proper qualification process would be extremely simple and make things 100x better

simply elect a committee to establish how fights should be scored. then create a course to teach that. have the applicants actually watch and score fights as a part of the curriculum. once they understand the scoring system and how to score fights properly, then they can be certified. once out in the real world the committee can then review certified judges performance. those reviews can lead to certain judges being eligible for higher and lower profile fights and also in extreme cases repeated poor judging can result in loss of certificate

this sort of process is already in place in a million aspects of life. there are examples everywhere. athletic commissions are government so they lack competence and any sort of common sense. its unfortunate

Yea, tank was hilarious. i just watched 10 and 11. hilarious. shamrock wins! injured, out. alternate comes in, beats tank. says he's going all the way! ... 5 minutes later, injured and out. the last alternate is also injured. They basically just declare Coleman the winner because everyone is injured and there's no one for him to fight in the final. what a ending!
